NIGHTLIFE TRAINING

What separates Nightlife Music + Video from its competitors?...
An impeccable commitment to customer service!

Nightlife is renowned for comprehensive and reliable 24/7 customer support. Now we have taken it one step further introducing on-site training for your staff on how to better use our products.

Training is an integral part of learning any new system or product and understanding the full capabilities of our HDMS™ is no different. As an example, music style and volume are just some of the key elements to creating the right atmosphere for a venue and Nightlife is here to
help with that.

We recognise the necessity of training new clients on the system and how to program the right music at the right time. Alternatively, it is just as important for existing Nightlife users to be refreshed and
updated on the latest tools available.

Sometimes staff are busy serving guests and they don’t notice what the guest can see or hear and the best way to prevent a guest from staying longer or leaving the venue is poor choice of music. Providing relevant training to Nightlife users will help create the ideal atmosphere in your venue where guests will feel comfortable about staying longer
and returning again.

Heading up our National Training Department is Bruce Harbert. With 20+ years of experience in hospitality, Bruce has a deep understanding of the industry and the value of training. His primary role will be visiting venues throughout Australia to help manage music and develop knowledge for the staff. Most of the training will be on-site, focusing on managers/supervisors and the main users of Nightlife. In saying this, there will also be opportunities for some group training for system operators of venues that have multiple systems within the one venue. It’s our commitment at Nightlife to ensure that you are getting the most from your HDMS™ and improve your customer’s experience which in turn will improve your business profits.

Nightlife is now providing you and your managers the opportunity to develop your HDMS™ skills in conjunction with one of the most powerful and user friendly music systems in the world at no extra cost.

For more information or to request a training session with Bruce call us on 1800 679 748.

MUSIC MUSE FOR YOUR VENUE

This month could quite easily go down as one of comebacks, particularly for the girls of music. We have megastars like Britney Spears, Delta Goodrem, Jennifer Lopez, The Veronicas, Robyn, Leann Rimes and Annie Lennox plus some awesome homegrown talent like Clare Bowditch, Jade Macrae, Abby Dobson and Bertie Blackman all releasing long-awaited singles. There’s also some brand new blood (Jess McAvoy, Tara Simmons, Laura Knight) and new singles from the likes of Tori Amos and Sarah Blasko.

BRITNEY SPEARS – ‘Gimme More’ (Sony BMG) CX138, JX12

Just when you thought Britters couldn’t indulge in any more scandals in her personal life - what with the impromptu baldness, public breakdowns and scraggy ex-husbands – along comes ‘Gimme More’ to remind us that Britney is indeed a proper pop star. Whether this is a genuine leak or simply marketing genius, radio programmers and the public alike are scrambling for the first listens of the sexy dance track, even we couldn’t wait, releasing an audio only version before the video is even complete. The track was produced by Nate ‘Danja’ Hills who has worked alongside production legend Timbaland on tracks from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado. The next few weeks will be a make or break time for Spears and as rumours have it, she’ll be opening at this year’s VMA’s with a performance of ‘Gimme More’ and another new track entitled ‘Cry’.

ROBYN - 'Konichiwa Bitches' (Universal) CR138

Who'd of thought that a perceived washed-up Swedish pop star from the mid-90's could whip back with such a great comeback single. Like 'Peaches', only a bit more loopy, this infectious little number comes across like a manga Missy Elliott mixed over pixelated hip-pop beats. With a quirky video that will make you grin and secretly want to know all the words, Robyn is back in a big way. Keep an eye out for her record coming soon.

MikaPLAIN WHITE T'S - 'Hey There Delilah' (EMI) RX138, JX122

If simple pop love songs are your bag, then you really can't get much better than this track. Every once in a while a love song emerges to strike a royal chord with a wide spectrum of pop music fans. 'Hey There Delilah' is one such tune, expressing young love irresistibly and providing an instant goldmine for the Illinois five-piece. While the boys will be rolling in it by year's end, it does set the bar incredibly high for the success of future singles.

MAN ABOUT TOWNSVILLE

Introducing DJ Pauly

DJ DREWDJ Pauly is one busy man. Entertaining the crowds at the Mad Cow Tavern in Townsville by night and telling everyone where to go by day! DJ Pauly (Paul Preston) runs one of the most visited websites in the area showcasing Townsville and North Queensland: www.townsvilleflava.com, which he launched in 2006. The Flava crew will tell you where to stay, what to do, where to party and take your photo then upload it to the website for you to download for free! Why? "I love Townsville and the people in it. Townsville has so much to give to all of us."

Being involved with music since the age of 5 (his mother DJ'd on armed forces radio in Malaysia), it's no surprise that during the 90's, DJ Pauly became one of Australia's #1 Reggae DJ's and has worked at some of the major clubs on the Gold Coast. So no surprises either, that his favourite artist is Bob Marley and ReggaeTown was the most memorable music festival he's been to.

"I started using Nightlife in 1993 when video tapes were still the go, and I remember the amount of equipment and mixers needed to present music video back then - how things have changed, but I reckon it's still a heap of fun." Evolving with Nightlife and the technology, DJ Pauly can now work quicker, easier and can plan and review his nights better. "I also find I have more time to talk to customers and take in feedback."

"Now at the height of my career, I work at one of the best nightclubs in Townsville (Mad Cow Tavern) and have signed a contract with R'n'B Superclub as a guest DJ at Bombay Rock in Townsville as well. I believe that I have much more to give as a DJ and I am looking forward to the next few years."

AT YOUR SERVICE

CHILLIN List

Nightlife’s scheduler allows music to play automatically to match the atmosphere you are trying to achieve at different times of the day. One of the keys to getting the most of your scheduler is ensuring appropriate lists are programmed. To help you understand some of our lists, we will focus on some key lists in upcoming articles and when they should be used.

This month we will discuss the CHILLIN list.

CHILLIN provides a list of commercial house and funky dance tunes. It is the perfect warm up for those pre-club hours in lounge/cocktail bars or anyone wanting an upbeat lively atmosphere. The list is designed for those venues trying to put energy into a room around 8 - 10pm. Songs in the list
will be commercial, fresh, upbeat, funky, ear-pleasing, and have a
slight dance-ability.

By loading CHILLIN we are creating a rhythmical mood easing your customers into full party mode. It’s not necessarily creating an intense dance vibe but will still be upbeat and commercial nonetheless. This list is often programmed after CAFE_LITE and CAFE or as a commercial, more-popular alternative to CAFE_HOUSE or even CAFE.

If you would like help with your music programming or would like to review your scheduler, please give the Client Services Team a call on 1800 773 468. We would be more than happy to help with programming your scheduler to suit your venue...

...we are of course at your service!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT : THE WAIFS

THE WAIFS have been making music in some form or another since 1992, but it was only with their last release - most notably with a little song called ‘London Still’ - that the Western Australian group truly made the commercial crossover. Now they’re somewhat of an Aussie household name.

Nightlife Music + Video’s Music Programmer, Ben Preece chats with Vikki Thorn of The Waifs about their latest album.

Ben Preece (BP): How do you feel about having unmastered copies of your new record - Sun Dirt Water - being sent to press for previewing?

Vikki Thorn (VT): Had I known that was happening, I may have put a stop to it! That’s really funny, as even I haven’t heard a mastered copy or even the mixed version you’re listening to. How does it sound?

BP: Even in this not-entirely-finished state, The Waifs are incredible. It’s been a long wait for Sun Dirt Water especially after the breakthrough ‘Up All Night’ and it’s definitely been well worth the wait.

VT: Thank you! Yeah I really think it’s a great-sounding and brilliantly-recorded record. “I think that’s part of the reason we went to the States to do it. We went to Nashville, which, initially, [sister] Donna [Simpson, guitar/vocals] and I were very resistant to the idea. Josh [Cunningham, vocals/guitar/song writing] convinced us we wouldn’t end up with something that sounded hardcore country.

BP: That’s interesting as a lot of people perceive the Waifs as closely walking the line of alt-country.

VT: It’s really a natural resistance to Josh’s will, he’s a big country fan and writes a lot of country songs and he’d sort of said that he’d like to make a country album. We’ve got one if we want to make it but Donna’s not at that place right now, she’s not really into country music.

BP: So did you write any of the songs yourself?

VT: Ha ha ha well actually the other guys have the satisfying lion’s share of the record, I have only one song on the record, ‘Sun Dirt Water’, it’s the title track as well as the first single. That’s the only song I’ve written in four years. I was writing a letter to my prospective husband, who I’d just met. It was written as a letter to him saying that if we’re going to get it on, baby, then this is what you need to give me.

Sun Dirt Water out now through Jarrah Records/MGM. Songs from the album are available on your HDMS™ now.
