MUSIC MUSE FOR YOUR VENUE

PINK - 'Dear Mr President' (Sony BMG) CX136, EX136, JX120

In Australia, it doesn’t get much bigger than Pink. After undertaking the largest arena tour Australia has seen, Pink confirms that she’s not just a live drawcard but also a musical force to be reckoned with. Her I’m Not Dead album is still sitting in the top five after an incredible 65 weeks and now comes the sixth single ‘Dear Mr President’. A scathing yet innocent and somewhat naïve attack on George W. Bush, Pink asks the questions that matter (“What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street”) and hits out hard at the man himself (“You’ve come a long way from whiskey and cocaine”). Never intended as a single because Pink saw it as too important to be a publicity stunt, the song itself is stunning and well worth a playlist addition.

GOTYE - tracks from Mixed Blood (Independent) CX136

Seriously, how much can one single man do right? After delivering one of the best albums of 2006 (Like Drawing Blood) and touring relentlessly with our new favourite live band The Basics, Wally De Backer returns under his more famous moniker with an ensemble of remixes, reworkings and even re-recordings entitled Mixed Blood, that plays more like a Gotye tribute record than a remix album. This week, as added bonuses to our club program, we’ve added a handful of the clubbier tracks from the record. Reworkings of ‘Learnalilgivinanlovin’, ‘Thanks For Your Time’ and ‘Hearts A Mess’ (by Bass Kleph, Bitrok and Duosseudo respectively) plus a personal request from Wally himself (‘A Distinctive Sound’ by Faus Paux) have all made the cut.

MikaCOLBIE CAILLAT – ‘Bubbly’ (Universal) CX136, EX136, JX120

Colbie Caillat put ‘Bubbly’ on MySpace last September and by early this year it had shot up to the site’s number one unsigned artist spot, a position she maintained for four months. Universal Republic quickly jumped onboard and the rest, as they say, is history. Somewhat of a female Jack Johnson, Caillat’s warm vocals along with her gentle acoustic arrangements effortlessly conjure the idyllic California she calls home. Now this sweet-without-being-soppy tale of new love is screaming up the Billboard chart with a massive 60,000 digital downloads sold in just five weeks leaving Colbie a certified star.

GARBAGE - 'Tell Me Where It Hurts' (Warner) RX136, JX120

Not quite toppling scepticisms that the band have indeed split, Garbage are showing the first signs of life since 2005 with this new single and a forthcoming greatest hits package entitled Absolute Garbage. ‘Tell Me Where It Hurts’ is as radio-friendly as they come with a video that features the ever-gorgeous Shirley Manson ditching the blonde for her trademark red hair and singing of disappointment in love. What will happen next in the Garbage story – no one really knows but with rumours of Manson’s solo career brewing, it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out.

WIN

“Neil Finn and Nick Seymour, you are charged that in the year 1985 in the city of Melbourne you did form a four-piece group called The Mullanes which within a year was a three-piece group called Crowded House who had a couple of hits in America, before becoming in 1991 a four-piece involving Neil’s brother Tim who left soon afterwards just as you were having your biggest British hits in the shape of ‘Weather With You’ and ‘Four Seasons In One Day’, and furthermore that by breaking up in 1996 just as people were getting to know who you were via your greatest hits album ‘Recurring Dream’ and now reforming ten years later, you clearly qualify as the most confusing band in the history of popular music. How do you plead?”

Neil Finn: “At least we’re top of one list.”

Ladies and gentlemen… the eternally beloved Crowded House need no introduction nor do they need any back-stories of what they’ve achieved, the musical legacy they’ve created or the amount of love that surrounds them. They are back with a new line-up – Neil Finn, Nick Seymour and Mick Hart plus recently recruited drummer Matt Sherrod – and ludicrously superb new album entitled Time On Earth.

Thanks to the kind folk at EMI, we have five Crowded House packs to give away. Each pack includes the brand new album – Time On Earth – plus a double pack that includes two albums from the excellent back catalogue – Crowded House (self-titled) and Temple Of Low Men. All you have to do is drop us an email at music@nightlife.com.au with your name, the venue you’re from and the answer to this simple question: What is the name of Crowded House’s late and legendary former drummer?

AT YOUR SERVICE

Getting the most out of your scheduler
What is the scheduler?

The scheduler is a timetable which allows you to program a list or lists of music to play automatically at any time of day.  Ultimately when used correctly the scheduler can allow you to turn on the Nightlife HDMS™ system and walk away ensuring you will have suitable music playing for your venue at all times.

How to program the scheduler

As an example we’ll look at a typical scheduler for an inner city hotel.  This will vary of course depending on factors such as demographics, atmosphere, opening hours, the type of patron your venue is aiming to attract and the busiest times of trading. Typically you might see lists scheduled as below.
                6am                 – Café Lite

                11am                 – Surf ‘n’ City

                5pm                 – Happy Hour

                8pm                 – Chillin’

Having said that, it’s always best to call Nightlife when making any changes to your music, however if you need to make a change for a special occassion, then follow these directions.

• Use your arrow keys to move across to the Utilities menu and press  [Enter].

• Use your arrow key to highlight Scheduler and press [Enter].
• Press [Enter] on Edit Schedule.

• Select the day of the week you wish to schedule your music for and press [Enter].

• If there are existing lists in the Scheduler you can delete them simply by using the arrow key up or down to highlight the entry in blue and press [Del].

• To add a list into the Scheduler press [Insert] and a blank entry line will appear at the top of the Scheduler.

• If you wanted to schedule the Café Lite list in at 6am simply type in [6] and press [Enter].

• A pop up box will appear with two options “am” and “pm”.

• Press [Enter] on “am”.

•  All of the music lists will appear.  Use your arrow key to highlight “CAFÉ_   LITE” and press [Enter].

• You will be presented with some options for the tempo of music the scheduler will automatically select to play.  In most instances we would recommend selecting “Random” by pressing [Enter].

• To add more lists to the Scheduler press [Enter] and follow the directions above.

• There is the option to copy this schedule to all or individual days of the week by pressing [C] and then selecting either “All” or whichever day of the week you wish to copy this schedule to.

• When complete press [Esc] to return to the main Nightlife HDMS™ interface.

Even if your venue is the type that chooses songs manually from your Nightlife system, it is beneficial to have suitable music lists programmed into the Scheduler.  For more information about matching our music lists to your venue call our Client Services Department on 1800 773 468.
