MAY 07 NIGHTLIFE NEWS

ANNOUNCING DJ TOOLS

For years, we here at Nightlife have worked towards creating the ultimate DJ product to provide you, the DJ, with the necessary ammunition to assist you in putting together a memorable set and delivering something that is not merely stringing four minute videos together.

Last year we took our Nightlife DJ Pro system to the next level by releasing the world’s first computerised beatmixing system complete with specially configured DJ controller and of course, complete, unrestricted access to Nightlife’s music video library. Naturally, this was greeted by DJs worldwide with open arms, however we realised the constant need for material other than what you hear on the radio.

So we went underground to access those exclusive club hits, dancefloor smashes and of course, the extended remixes of those popular tracks we all know and love and add them to your database for you to include in your playlists.

Now, ladies and gents, we’re proud to announce DJ Tools, a new and exciting addition to our HDMS™ that gives you the necessary tools to really take your sets to the next level and help you all look like superstar DJs.

So what are they exactly?

It’s simple, really: DJ Tools are certain extractions or “pieces” of songs that DJs can use to enhance their set, join radio edits together in a seamless mix or most popularly to sample and remix live.

To break it down, these will include the following:

1) Acapellas: vocal samples with no music included
2) Instrumentals: just the music, no vocals
3) Dub mixes: instrumentals without a melody line – i.e. mostly a beat, a bassline and some other occasional blips and beeps.

Fast Facts:

• A list entitled ‘DJ_TOOLS’ is available to you now, however it’s only a search list and is not recommended to be used like a normal playlist or inserted into your Scheduler.
• A category entitled ‘DJ_TOOLS’ is also available for ease of search.
• The DJ Tools themselves will be distributed free of charge to subscribers of the CR/CX programs as an extra offering in their fortnightly music releases
• DJ Tools are recommended for usage with our Pro DJ system with Numark controller.

As this is only the beginining of this exciting project you will begin to see more DJ_TOOLS tracks filter though over time.  As always please feel free to drop us a special request on music@nightlife.com.au. To find out more information on how DJ Tools can work for you and your venue or how to activate DJ Tools on your Nightlife DJ system, contact our call centre today on 1800 773 468.  Serious DJs apply now!

MUSIC MUSE FOR YOUR VENUE

MAROON 5 – ‘Makes Me Wonder’ (Universal) CX133, RX133, JX117

A short five years after their complete and utter radio ubiquity with their debut album Songs About Jane, the mighty Maroon 5 are back with a funky, 80’s R&B-ish sort of number which the band themselves describe as “Bob Dylan meets R. Kelly.”

Ladies will find Adam Levine to be dreamy, he still has a vaguely Jay Kay vocal-thing going on and he still likes vids that feature him and gorgeous women making bodily contact. “It’s a fantasy airport,” Levine said of the concept. “John had this amazing idea to turn an airport on its end and make it sort of bizarre and surreal and sexually charged and sleek and amazing and fashionable, which are things you never typically would associate with an airport.”

NATASHA BEDINGFIELD – ‘I Wanna Have Your Babies’ (Sony BMG) CX133, JX117, DX66

Also making a comeback this week - after a worldwide breakthrough - is Natasha Bedingfield with the first single from her anticipated follow-up album. ‘I Wanna Have Your Babies’ is a great little number which talks about the trouble with women rushing out to find the perfect guy and the father to their babies. The video has a bit of comedy with the first part reminding me of the gym scene on Pink’s ‘Stupid Girls’ video (in part because Natasha is also in a gym, and also because it’s the same director). There’s bubbles, it’s cool, it’s fresh and it features a Girl Aloud. You can spot Nadine Coyle behind Natasha in the club scene.

MIMS – ‘This Is Why I’m Hot’ (EMI) CX133, JX117

This is why ‘This Is Why I’m Hot’ is hot: Because it’s hot. There are of course other reasons the breakout single from Mims, a Washington Heights rapper who intends to carry New York hip-hop on his back and restore us to glory, is hot. It ascended to number one on Billboard’s Hot 100, for example, and topped iTunes singles chart as well. Also featuring the hot idea of mentioning why he’s hot in each city, with each time a new city is mentioned – the beat changes to a hit track from that city. You’ll spot Kanye’s ‘Jesus Walks,’ Dre’s ‘Nothin’ But A “G” Thang’, Mobb Deep’s ‘Shock Ones Pt II,’ and E-40’s ‘Tell Me When To Go.’ Get this one on your hip-hop playlists right away. HOT.

TRAVIS – ‘Closer’ (Sony BMG) RX133, EX133, JX117

Another band returning from an extended hiatus is Scotland’s Travis, a band who’ve been remarkably quiet since the release of 2003’s 12 Memories and the following Singles compilation. This anticipated lead single from the forthcoming album The Boy With No Name is a widescreen sweep of emotive and melodic indie rock which songwriter Fran Healy saying “bred the rest of the album.” Filmed in L.A., the video is classic Travis material with each band member playing a store employee in a supermarket. Healy - clad in a bear suit as the store’s mascot - breaks into song, prompting shoppers with trolleys in tow engaging in a synchronised dance routine, until the store’s manager - played by long standing Travis fan Ben Stiller - breaks up the fun.

Ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding for the return of the mighty Silverchair. You’ve undoubtedly already listened to the first single ‘Straight Lines’  repeatedly and now you have the opportunity to lay your hands on the full-length opus – Young Modern.
On the Newcastle trio’s fifth longplayer, frontman Daniel Johns shares the producer role with Nick Launay who had helmed earlier ‘Chair albums Freak Show and Neon Ballroom. Diorama producer, David Bottrill was brought in as mixer on Young Modern. Paul Mac was again on hand for keyboard duties as he was associated with the group’s two previous albums and legendary Beach Boys collaborator Van Dyke Parks reprised his Diorama role penning orchestrations for three songs. In keeping with the free spirited nature of the process, his sections were recorded in Prague... as you do when you’re seeking 80 piece orchestras.
Silverchair’s intent is clear from the brash guitar wail and the pounding drums and bass that give lift-off to the album’s opening track, ‘Young Modern Station’. “The band is back together” exclaims an exuberant Daniel Johns a few seconds into the song and it’s impossible to argue the point. Then it’s straight into the slow burning epic ‘Straight Lines’ and on through an album full of melody, invention and exuberance.

Thanks to the champions at EMI, we have five copies of Young Modern to give away. Just drop us an email – music@nightlife.com.au – and tell us your name, your address, your venue and the name of Silverchair’s very first amphibious-sounding debut album.

KEEPING YOUR MUSIC UP-TO-DATE

Nightlife is proud to introduce to you an enticing new Café list called Café World.

Café World has evolved to fit a specific need in today’s upmarket dining and cocktail areas. These areas have traditionally been using down tempo electronica with such artists as Tosca and Down to the Bone. But just as the tastes in food and cocktails have changed, the tastes in these areas of music is also slowly evolving.

We are seeing a move to the organic rhythms from across a broad area of the world. It was the rising popularity of such acts as Buena Vista Social Club that saw this move  to the lush warm sounds that now feature in many upmarket chill out areas.

Our Café World list offers you a fine selection of palatable sounds from all corners of the globe including Africa, France, Cuba, Greece and Latin America.  Café World provides your venue with easy listening background music with acoustic flavours that are a blend of traditional cultural sounds with soulful, laidback beats.

Many of our clients find that the mid tempo, smooth quality of Café World creates an atmosphere parallel to their sociable lounge bar, wine bar or café and restaurant.

For more information on how Café World can add that extra spice to your venue, please call our Client Services Department on 1800 773 468.
