OCTOBER 06 NIGHTLIFE NEWS

YOUR SPACE, YOUR MUSIC

Today’s inner city bar is a far cry from the old beer gardens of yesteryear.Gone are the blazing fluros and stereos blaring in corners, replaced by sophisticated mood lighting and carefully chosen ambient music.

Nightlife has remained the leader in the provision of commercial music video to mainstream venues for nearly 20 years. But, like the industry it serves, Nightlife has broadened its music library to embrace a host of emerging music styles.

Music Designed For You
The Nightlife HDMS™ (Hard Drive Music System) is widely regarded as the world’s most sophisticated music programming unit. When this is used to control atmosphere or specialist music, the effect is the same as having your own personal programmer.

You can easily have your music suit the different trading patterns of your room. The HDMS™ music programming is so subtle that it effortlessly gives you different shades of tempo and dynamic range.
In short, it almost thinks for you.

You Get The World’s Greatest Music Labels
We have built a huge network of record companies (see panel to the right) to include the greatest artists of ambient music, smoky jazz, world music and the emerging trend of acoustic chill rock.

Lists such as Surf ‘n’ City are aimed at the savvy young café crowd. These people like their down tempo electronica and urban music but are also fans of the hugely popular acoustic chill. Artists such as Xavier Rudd, Josh Rouse, Bernard Fanning and Ben Lee have influenced a music genre of their own.

We have also seen an evolution in background music. The slow, synthesized sound of Café Del Mar has been replaced by funkier, more organic sounds featuring light tribal rhythms with wood and wind instruments. Nightlife’s Café and Café Lite lists capture these sounds.

Fresh Music Delivered Fortnightly
You get access to the world’s best labels. You get the music shaped to suit your venue. And you get the only company that delivers this new music to you twice a month. It is easy to see why Nightlife as Australia’s largest supplier of programmed music video is quickly becoming the first choice for customised background music.

For great music, check out these lists:
CAFE: Funk ‘n’ Groove lounge music
CAFE_LITE: Downtempo, chill out cafe music
SURFNCITY: Acoustic chill and laid back city sounds
CAFE_JAZZ: Laidback jazz music of old and new
CHILLIN: Commercial house and funky dance tunes
REMIX: Audio remixes and dance tunes

NEWS FROM NZ

Well, the annual HANZ (Hospitality Association of New Zealand) conference has passed us for yet another year and firstly, we’d just like to say thanks to all of you who called in to the Nightlife stand to say G’day, it was great to be able to catch up with you all.

One of the gala events of the HANZ conference this year was the announcement of the winners of the 2006 Awards for Excellence. Nightlife NZ would like to congratulate The Bealey’s Speight’s Ale House in Christchurch, who won the award for Best New/Redeveloped Bar/Restaurant (Group), and the Holy Grail Sports Bar also in Christchurch, who won the award for Best Sports Bar. As well as those winners, congratulations must go to Smitty’s Sports Bar & Grill, in Whitianga, who were finalists for the Best Sports Bar award.

Perhaps not coincidentally these venues are also Nightlife Music + Video system users! But seriously, HANZ award nominations and wins are great distinctions for these venues - needless to say, we’re extremely proud to be involved with such high quality bars and restaurants.

Its been a fairly quiet month for NZ music. Stellar* have emerged from hiatus with a new record in tow - the much more laid back, ‘Something Like Strangers’, which is definitely worth checking out. Also self proclaimed “rock n roll motherf--kers” The Datsuns are back with their third album, ‘Smoke and Mirrors.’ Stellar* and The Datsuns are available on the HDMS™ now.

Lastly, congratulations to DJ Jay K, from the Grumpy Mole in Nelson, who wins a $50 CD voucher for sending in his feedback. This will be in the mail shortly!

INTRODUCING DJ RUSSEL

There’s a place in the world where you can explore rugged peaks, savour the delights of seafood caught by your own hands, and stroll along white sandy beaches that carry on forever. It’s one of the rare places on earth where you are able to walk from the beach straight onto a coral reef. Where is this place you ask? The Potshot Hotel Resort in Exmouth, Western Australia.

With four bars in the resort, DJ Russel, aka Wayne Britain, sure has his work cut out for him! Busy being the General Manager by day, and DJ Russel at night, Wayne is enjoying using the Nightlife HDMS™. His favourite song of the moment is Eminem’s “Shake That” or his all time favourite is none other than Daddy Cool’s ‘Eagle Rock’.

When asked who would be the one person he’d like to meet, Wayne replied, “Richard Branson, love his outlook in life and his ability to look at consumer needs and address them.”

PROGRAMMING YOUR BILLBOARDS

HTML and JPEG Billboards

The billboards advertising program is the perfect advertising tool.  You can create your own advertisements to let your patrons know of upcoming events and specials and display them on your TVs before or after each video clip.

Our billboards program lets you import JPEG pictures or HTML WebPages as well creating text message within the program.  The advantage of using the JPEG and HTML formats are that you are able to load high-quality images as well as text into your system, photos and flash animation that can bring your advertising to life.  Many of our venues are working with web designers to create professional advertisements to use on their HDMS™.

JPEG’s and HTML can be imported onto our billboards program either via a floppy disc or CD-ROM. JPEG and HTML Billboards must be created to the following specifications:

JPEG Billboards

1.         File Size: 640 (width) x 480 (height) pixels
2.         File Name: xxxxxxxx.jpg (no more than 16 characters allowed)
3.         Save your work as 24 Bit RGB JPEG’s

If you want to have a go at creating your own picture billboards you will need to create your images in a graphics program such as Photoshop.

HTML Billboards

1.  The HTML control file should have extension .html or .htm
2. Flash movies, GIFs and all other associated files must be embedded in the HTML file
3.   All the files should then be contained within a separate folder and the folder saved to CD-ROM or floppy disk
4.   Every file associated with the HTML must be kept in the same folder as the HTML file
5. The file name should not be greater than 16 characters
6. The HTML screen should be no bigger than 640 x 480 pixels in size (including Flash resolution if Flash animation is used)
7. The screen should be display only ie. not interactive

There are many software programs for creating WebPages, for those wanting to have a go you can start with Microsoft Word to create a simple page.

To import JPEG’s and HTML’s into Nightlife’s Billboard Program you:

1.         Press [Ctrl] [B] to access the Billboard program from the main    Nightlife Screen
2.         Press [Spacebar] to enter the Billboard program
