Making A Big Sound
 qmusic

Queensland's music industry body Q Music hosts the annual Big Sound Music Industry Summit in Brisbane this October.  This year Nightlife has the privilege of being one of the proud sponsors of the Q Song awards, an event held during the internationally renowned summit.   With approximately 3000 participants, 300 delegates, three days of non-stop forums and events, and more than 100 artists performing at the showcase gigs, it has been labeled as possibly the largest gathering of international independent music industry professionals that Australia has seen.

Big Sound plays a vital role in developing the music industry on a national and international basis, as well as offering the chance to learn, network and be inspired by innovators in the field.

Nightlife's participation in this year’s event signifies our commitment to supporting the industry at large, and offers back to us the opportunity to gain insights, ideas and information from key industry members.  Our music licensing coordinator Tyler McLoughlan, says she looks forward to seeing some high caliber speakers and being able to network amongst some incredibly inspiring and knowledgeable people.

The Big Sound Music Industry Summit takes place in Brisbane's entertainment precinct, Fortitude Valley from the 18-20 October. For more information please visit www.qmusic.com.au.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Urban Music Awards

Late July saw the first annual Urban Music Awards held at Sydney’s Entertainment Centre. The star studded event included the likes of Hilltop Hoods, Israel and Weapon X.

The award ceremony opened with Scribe, Jade McCrae and Guy Sebastian dominating, and Brisbane talent, Random, taking out best RnB Group award. The exclusive VIP after party, held at Gas Nightclub, featured international DJ sensation Jazzy Jeff and saw some of Australia’s biggest Hip Hop and RnB DJ’s dropping a set.

Amongst all of the glitter and dazzle of the night stood Nightlife’s DJ Pro and what an impression it made! The DJ Pro opened the night and as the guests made their way in, the cream of RnB talent was showing on the video screens. The owners of Gas were excited by the potential of the system.

Australasian Gaming Expo

The most influential gaming industry event in the Asia Pacific region takes place in early September in Sydney. Hosted by the Australasian Gaming Machine Manufacturers Association (AGMMA), the Australasian Gaming Expo (AGE) is an annual convention to appreciate and celebrate the gaming industry.

With 15 years in the making and over 200 exhibitors demonstrating a full product range of the latest in gaming equipment, technology and services, Nightlife’s exhibit is amongst some of the finest in the business. This year will be no different as we grab the opportunity to create a presence in the industry traditionally belonging to hotels and RSL’s.

Nightlife’s Business Development Manager, Michael Hickey mentions that, “RSL’s and Hotels these days are becoming more sophisticated, and with that comes the need for the right music controls and vision in particular areas and Nightlife can tailor a solution to meet those needs.”

So if you’re in Sydney on the 3-5 September, come and visit us at the AGE at stand number 234.

News from NZ

Over the years it has been exciting to watch and be part of the growth of New Zealand music, which is really going from strength to strength. This year Nightlife NZ was asked to vote in the annual NZ Music Awards, run by RIANZ (Recording Industry Association of New Zealand).

Some notable nominees included Nesian Mystik, whose second album ‘Freshmen’ is sure to be one of the favourites for Album of the Year, along with Elemeno P, whose second album ‘Trouble in Paradise’ spent a considerable amount of time on the album charts, as well as achieving great success behind the albums’ first 3 singles ‘11:57’, ‘Burn’, and ‘You Are’. Other notable nominees included Dave Dobbyn, for his comeback album ‘Welcome Home’, Bic Runga for her great album ‘Birds’, and Anika Moa for her latest release, ‘Stolen Hill’.

Strong challenges for Single of the Year come from Pluto, behind their track ‘Long White Cross’, and Hollie Smith, with the single ‘Bathe in the River’ from the movie, ‘No 2’. Hip-hop artists, Savage and Aaradhna will probably make waves as well, both individually with their respective singles ‘Moonshine’ and ‘Shake’, and working together on ‘They Don’t Know’.

In the all-important Music Video category, Fat Freddy’s Drop look to be the favourites with their fantastic clip for ‘Wandering Eye’, but they will have to endure some serious challenges from the artists mentioned above. No matter who wins, one thing is for sure: New Zealand music will be the winner on the day. Of course, all these great artists are available now on your HDMS™ system, so check them out!

Introducing DJ Haydn

With over 24 years of playing music to the general public, Hadyn Butler is considered one of Brisbane’s most experienced DJs. From humble beginnings in skating rinks and private parties, DJ Hayden has gone on to become involved with some of Brisbane’s most influential venues such as the Regatta and Friday’s.

He has become a familiar face to more than just a few punters as he has recently launched a new business venture called Truckn’DJs, giving younger DJs the opportunity to establish themselves in the nightclub scene. The name Truckn’DJs came about from Hadyn’s other little venture, where two ’74 Jeep Renegades which have been built to be the ultimate mobile DJ console.

Hadyn plays at a number of Nightlife venues as well as supporting some of Brisbane’s local outdoor events including the Valley Street Fiesta, Caxton Seafood Festival, Regatta Fest and Doomben Races for Melbourne Cup. He is also involved with charities such as The Variety Club, Kim Walters Choices Program and Step Up, which are targeted at helping under privileged children.

PART2 – Hidden Songs

Last month we discussed the benefits of skipping a song, as opposed to deleting it from the playlist. Sometimes it may be beneficial to take this to another level, where a song can be hidden from all standard users- giving supervisors an opportunity to keep a song hidden in the system, to be unhidden only at their discretion.

Hidden songs appear only in the Hidden list and adding and removing songs to this list is password protected.

You can edit this list like any other through Lists>Edit User List, the password required is the default password “user”- unless you have customised your own user password.

When you are editing in the Hidden list you can use the Search function to help you select the song you would like to have hidden. By hitting Enter on the songs you find will add them to the Hidden list. Songs can be removed from the Hidden list by highlighting the entry and hitting Delete.

After editing the Hidden list hit Escape and select “Yes” to re-build the database, the songs in the Hidden list will now not be found anywhere on the system and can only be played if they are removed from the Hidden list.  Next month we will review the benefits of Negative lists, which proactively hide a whole style of music. If you would like more help with organising your system our friendly Client Services Department are always happy to help and can be reached on 1800 773 468.
