Lookout! It's "Vicious"
The lucky DJs who subscribe to HDMS™ programs CR and CX
may have noticed that the music we provide you with has been
blitzing the ARIA Club Tracks chart. This is a result of the
exceptional work from our music licensing department. Nightlife
has secured licensing for audio only tracks direct from Vicious.
The music they send us can be 6 weeks or more in advance of
retail release. This music is made available to certain DJs
across Australia specifically so that Vicious can use their
feedback to gauge the strength of a song and whether or not it
should be released to retail, and if so, when. Here's a little about
the history of icious so you can see why it was so important
that Nightlife provide you with their music.
Starting life under the name of Vicious Vinyl, the now simply
titled "Vicious" has been selling, distributing and licensing
records all over Australia and the world since 1990. Conceived
by John Course, Andy Van and Colin Daniels out of a frustration
at not having Australian dance music out there doing battle with
the world's best, Vicious now encapsulates House, Breaks,
Progressive, Electronica and "anything we like", as the three
founders put it.
Early in 1992 one of the biggest Australian Techno/Club
anthems of the year "Come With Me" by Astral Project became
so sought after that eventually Mushroom Records did a full CD
release and Vicious made its first video clip.
Up until early '99 all the Vicious releases had been distributed
by Mushroom Distribution Services (M.D.S.) in Australia, with
several UK distributors taking product to the UK market on
limited vinyl import. By June 1999 the compilation series "House
& Club Anthems" was released through EMI. Following that
success Vicious decided to make Virgin Australia their home,
going on to release the acts Madison Avenue and Rogue
Traders. With the many changes taking place at major labels,
Vicious decided to go back to an independent distributor in
early 2004 and teamed up with Shock Records Australia.
By setting up in Melbourne and encouraging local and interstate
talent, Vicious has inadvertently played a huge part in making
Australia a far-flung but integral part of the
global dance music scene. The music Vicious
releases is constantly evolving and whether it
be house, techno, breaks or a hybrid of rock
and something completely new, Vicious are
open-minded to it. Both Vicious labels
continually release new songs and push new
talent with Vicious Grooves taking care of the
funkier selections and Vicious releasing the
electronic and breaks sounds. Zip Music was created late
2004, with the concept of bringing good dance music from o/s to
Australian audiences, radio and retailers.
Here's a small snippet of what Nightlife has already released as
audio only mixes on our CR and CX HDMS™ programs. Cabin
Crew "Star 2 Fall", Dirty South "Sleazy", Live Element
"Something About You", Midnight Star "Midas Touch", Quesh
"Candy Girl", Supafly vs Fishbowl "Let's Get Down"... Stay tuned
for more.

Move over Paris Hilton, someone else is stealing your erotic
car-washing crown. Ironically, this time it's pastor's daughter
Jessica Simpson who has Christian groups up in arms for her
sexy behaviour in her video for the Nancy Sinatra classic
These Boots Are Made For Walking. It
was filmed to promote the soundtrack for
her forthcoming movie Dukes Of
Hazzard. In the video, Simpson is
dressed in her Daisy Duke attire
complete with denim short shorts and
midriff-baring top. She struts around a
bar in red boots, gyrating and all-around
sexing up the crowd of cowboys, including collaborator Willie
Nelson. The latter part of the video, however, is drawing the
most attention as Simpson performs similar moves but this
time wearing a skimpy string bikini as she suds up the General
Lee. You can check out the newly ad-libbed line dance and all
the action on CX114.

Hot on the heels of his last single In My
Arms, comes another track from Scottish
producer Mylo. Again reworking an oldskool,
cheesy classic, this time he's riffled
through his own back catalogue to mash
his previous hit Drop The Pressure with
the Miami Sound Machine's Dr. Beat.
The result.... another colossal club
anthem dripping in 80's nostalgia called
Doctor Pressure. It was originally a bootleg spliced together by
Phil N Dog before it fell into the hands of Mylo who re-jigged it,
stamping his style all over it. With a big thumbs up from Gloria
Estefan and the Miami crew, there was no stopping him and
here you have it featuring on CR114. It will undoubtedly become
another party pleaser.

For a brief time in 1995, Seattle trio
The Presidents Of The United States
Of America ruled Aussie airwaves
with such hits as Lump, Peaches,
Dune Buggy and their rocking debut
self-titled album. Ten years on, they're
back together and signed to a Brisbane
label and have released a new catchy
little new number about a pervy postman's habit of snatching
love letters. It's called Some Postman and, believe it or not, the
video is shot by Aussies overseas entirely on MMS phones... a
world first! It's available now with your RD114 (HDMS™ only).

Mixing guitar sounds with dance beats is somewhat of a trend at
the moment but nobody does it quite like British/Aussie duo
BodyRockers. Having already topped
club charts worldwide with the cracking
I Like The Way You Move, the boys
have earned themselves fans in the
likes of Erick Morillo and Pete Tong,
two guys not to be sneezed at when it
comes to dance music. Round &
Round is the next pumping track lifted from their beat-tastic
self-titled debut album. Pump it out now from CR114.

Kanye West's brilliant new album Late Registration is on
shelves and already he's pushing another single off it - Gold
Digger, a killer track about money
grabbing women who undoubtedly cross
Kanye's path a bit more regularly now. It
features a sample of Ray Charles' I Got A
Woman and a guest spot from
last year's onscreen Ray,
Jamie Foxx. It's on CR114.

DJ Funkadelic - Strike Bayside.
When asked his age, Andy van Rossum
quickly replies "too young to know better,
too old to care"! No matter his age, as DJ
Funkadelic he bowls 'em over with his
sleek selections from the HDMS™ at
Frankston's Strike Bowling Bar a couple
of nights every week.

Andy's impressive DJ resume spans 7 years and started with
underage events and school formals, he then went into radio, cohosting
a drive-time show on Geelong's 94.7 The Pulse as well
as hosting his own remix show called 'Technology'. These days
he has a number of regular DJ gigs and has successfully
completed several accredited DJ courses. Not to mention his
day job as Music Producer at Digital Media Production.
Andy has only worked with Nightlife's HDMS™ for around 6
months but reckons it's "absolutely awesome". He says, "I'm
very impressed by the quality of both the music selection and the
video. I honestly believe that any venue that does not have this
system is losing potential revenue". Thanks Andy - we agree!

News from NZ
New Zealand produced music must be between seasons at
the moment - plenty of low-beat tunes but nothing of particular
interest to your dancefloor. NZX updates have been
distributed along with your main update over the last few
months, and could easily have slipped your notice - so keep an
eye out for those additional tracks. Meanwhile, many of the
charting dancefloor fillers can be found on your usual Club
Releases.
Don't forget those DJ feedback sheets - fax them back or drop
us an email at nzinfo@nightlife.com.au. e love your
feedback and want to know what music you're playing.
At the time of printing, the position of Lower North Island
Account Manager is vacant. We are hoping to re-employ
someone as soon as possible, but in the meantime, please do
not hesitate to contact the office for any technical or training
issues - JoArna is able to diagnose most problems over the
phone and can also handle any training that is required.

Wedding Belle
Another Nightlifer has marched down the aisle in style - must be
something in the air!! Our Sales & Marketing Manager, Paula
Raiti, became Mrs Paula Geinitz in a delightfully traditional
ceremony in late July at St Stephens
Cathedral in the heart of Brisbane. The
reception was held in Southbank's River
Room, overlooking the water with the full
moon and some unscheduled fireworks
(courtesy of another function) for effect.
Nightlife's own legendary DJ, Michael Hickey,
provided the entertainment on the HDMS
before her new husband, Jeff whisked Paula
away to Europe for a 4 week honeymoon,
which included romantic places such as
Paris, Barcelona, Athens and Rome.
