Mixing Sport with Nightlife
Ahhh, sports bars, those venues where two great Aussie
passions combine: drinking and sport. Nightlife has been
following the emergence of the sports bar phenomenon and
continues to work closely with owners, managers and DJs to
ensure we are meeting the specific programming
requirements of these meccas for the sports mad. Limited run
memorabilia, busy event calendars, plasmas as far as the eye
can see, and a very good chance of bumping into one of your
sporting idols all add up to make sports bars the perfect place
for fans to take in a game or hang with friends.
Nightlife's HDMS™ has become an indispensable feature of
many sports bars throughout Australia, New Zealand (that
other nation of sporting tragics) and, more recently, the USA.
Here's a brief profile on a small selection of sports bar clients:
Adrenalin Sports Bar is the
biggest of its kind in Brisbane and
well-known all over Oz with a
Formula One racing car mounted
on the wall and a vast collection of
sports memorabilia. Sports stars
are regularly seen having a few
drinks and laughs with mates.
The HDMS™ plays a pivotal role in
creating an energetic atmosphere throughout the bar for
sports enthusiasts and clubbers alike. An extensive range of
sport is shown during the night and the HDMS™ is used by DJ
Carlos to create a club atmosphere into the early hours.
Since the 1880s the Coogee Bay Hotel has been one of
Sydney's favourite destinations for locals and visitors alike.
This impressive venue has six bars, a gaming lounge,
brasserie, conference and function facilities, 4.5 star boutique
accommodation and, of course, a well-known sports bar. The
expansive bar utilises a Nightlife Jukebox, which gets lots of
spin-off action from the 10 or so pool tables situated nearby.
This venue has a second HDMS™ and Juke in its beach bar, and
a third (Pro DJ) in their nightclub.
Situated in the heart of Wellington's entertainment district, The
Wellington Sports Cafe is renowned as one of the best sports
bars in the North Island of New Zealand. The 5 x 3 metre
screen shows all the big games and even the dining booths
have individual plasma screens. Later in the evening the Cafe
becomes a major entertainment hot spot with great music from
Nightlife's HDMS™ and a huge atmosphere.
Playmakers in Fargo, North Dakota was recently rated as one
of the USA's top 25 Sports Bars in Sports Illustrated Magazine,
and is a newcomer to Nightlife, having discovered the HDMS
at this year's Nightclub & Bar Show in Las Vegas. Playmakers
is a multi-faceted place and part of a sports and entertainment
complex that draws crowds from many miles away. The bar's
signature is a floor that resembles a football field.
As you can see, Nightlife's HDMS™ is the perfect partner to
sports bars, no matter what side you barrack for.

Anyone who went anywhere near a club in the early 90s will
surely remember spending a drunken three and a half minutes
on the dancefloor throwing in the line "if you
wanna wait 'til later, hands off my detonator".
Think back and you might also remember
the gorgeous Melissa, her role on soapie EStreet
and her massive club floorfillers
Read My Lips and Sexy (Is The Word),
which featured Hollywood heart-throb
Simon Baker as a shirtless dancer. You do?
Well she's back, gorgeous as ever, this time
with her surname Tkautz and a camp and funky cover of the
1984 Prince-produced, Sheila E tune The Glamorous Life.
Give the video or bonus audio only remix (HDMS™ only) a play
from CR113.

Kanye West returns this month and
already his latest single Diamonds From
Sierra Leone is off to a flying start. Kanye
takes production to the next level on this
outstanding single, which boasts one of
the most compelling samples in a long
time, Shirley Bassey's Diamonds Are
Forever. Lyrically, Kanye spits out rhymes with his usual razor
sharp humor and tells us of his first 12 months in the music
industry. "Now all I need is y'all to pronounce my name... it's
Kanye - but some of my plaques - they still say Kane." The
video was shot on location in Prague and is just a teaser of the
superstar producer's second album Late Registration. Watch
the video, released earlier this month on CX113.

Currently flying high in the charts with
her single They, 2005's female solo
singing sensation Jem gives us the
next step in her worldwide runaway
success with Just A Ride, the second
single lifted from her aptly-titled album
Finally Woken. Currently being
dubbed a "funky Dido", the Welsh born songstress delivers yet
another addictive little slice of pop brilliance destined for repeat
radio play and the top of the charts. Play it now from CR113.

The Kiwi hip hop scene has been
growing at an amazing rate over the
last couple of years, with the likes of
Scribe, Decepticonz and King
Kapisi setting the standard for a
sound that is uniquely New Zealand
grown. Fast Crew are the latest kids
on the hip hop block with a style that's recognisably Kiwi and
surprisingly void of samples and loops, the band chooses to
record live instruments and have dubbed their distinctive style
"strum n' bass". Fast Crew's It's The Incredible is on CR113
and is off the hook! Give it a spin!

As inescapable and buzzy as flies at a
backyard barbecue, Pon De Replay is
already a US hit of jurassic-sized proportions
for Barbados-born starlet, Rihanna. A quick
audition with Jay-Z, President and CEO of
Island Def Jam Recordings was all it took for
the stunning 17 year old to solidify a recording
contract. Taking its title from Caribbean slang,
Pon De Replay is a funky dancehall demand for a club DJ to
keep the groove going by playing her song, and
cranking it up. It's lifted from her debut album
Music Of The Sun but we have it here on CR113.

DJ Isaac - Paddington Hotel.
This month we dedicate this little corner of our
newsletter to one of Nightlife's very own crazy
but lovable, colourful but capable superstars,
DJ Isaac Ashton. By day, when he's not bouncing around the
office driving us all completely nuts, he's Nightlife's production
co-ordinator, pulling all those behind the scenes bits and pieces
together to ensure your new music gets to you on time every
time. By night he's spinning tunes and indulging in other monkey
business at Brisbane's legendary Paddo Tavern and other
McGuires' venues.
|
It all started two years ago when Isaac had a dream. a dream to
play music for the masses while chatting up the ladies AND
getting paid to do it! Well, his dream came true and the rest, as
they say, is history.
An avid hip hop fan, Isaac's currently digging 2Pac's "Ghetto
Gospel", but a Surfie influence is revealed when he names
Sublime's "What I Got" as his all time favourite.

At Your Service
Making the Most of Billboards
It's easier than you think to create text messages to appear on
your screens by using the billboard electronic advertising
program on your HDMS™. Even better, if you have a desktop
publishing package, you can create your own in-house Jpegs
which can then be imported onto the billboard program via a
floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Jpegs must be created to the following specifications:
File Size : 640 x 480 pixels
File Name : xxxxxxxx.jpg (no more than 8 characters)
Importing an incorrect sized billboard will affect the performance
of the HDMS™ so make sure you always check the billboard
before importing it.
Did you know that Nightlife's billboard program can also import
and display HTML screens! The process works in exactly the
same way as if you were importing a Jpeg from a CD-ROM or
floppy, however, there are a few more specifications that need to
be followed:
* The HTML control file should have extension .html or .htm
* All the files should be contained within a separate folder and
the folder saved to CD-ROM or floppy.
* Every file associated with the HTML must be kept in the same
folder as the HTML file.
* No paths attached to any associated JPGs or GIFs.
* The file name no greater than 16 characters.
* The HTML screen no bigger than 640 x 480 pixels in size.
* The screen should be display only ie. not interactive.
* Flash .SWF files should be linked to the HTML control file.
News from NZ
There was much discussion and hype surrounding the recent
Lions Tour, and the result - including the on-field scores, was
outstanding for the hospitality industry in New Zealand. It also
served as a reminder of what an excellent dimension music
video adds to a venue.
It was with great pleasure that we stood in the Degree Bar at the
Viaduct Basin in Auckland and enjoyed the 'after-match' party
with a wealth of Lions supporters. Kevin Schwarz, co-owner of
the venue, took it upon himself to become Party DJ, which
resulted in an interesting array of music videos, mostly from the
early 60's and 70's. But the real highlight was observing the
Lions fans who could not keep their eyes off the big screen with
all the video clips being played, and there was much pointing and
discussion as each clip came up. So, again we can pride
ourselves that there are certain things we do well down-under
(and now also in the USA) that they simply can't do in the British
Isles!

Music Man Gets Hitched
Another of Nightlife's shining stars, our music studio man, singer,
musician and regular 'Aussie Artist Review' columnist, Justin
Stephenson, married the stunning Ms Charlene Bruiners on a
sunny Brisbane winter's afternoon in June. After the breathtaking
mid-afternoon ceremony, about 100 guests were invited to
celebrate at Indooroopilly Golf Club,
arriving to witness a glorious sunset
behind the fairways. They partied on
through the night with talented friends
and family providing much of the musical
entertainment. Even Justin snuck a few
tunes in, including a ballad composed for
and serenaded to his new wife especially
for the occasion. The newlyweds jetted
off to Fiji for their honeymoon, enjoying
three weeks of blue skies, glorious
beaches and warm weather.
