From Strength to Strength
As any club or hotel owner will tell you, a venue is only as good as
the team behind it. Look at any successful venue and you will find
it has a culture that focuses on its customers, is committed to
innovation, and is determined to accept only the highest
standards.
Nightlife is, by any measure, a success story. We now look after
1200 venues in three countries and believe we've got to where
we are because we share the same core values as our
successful customers. This month we bring you a glimpse of the
team - the 'people power' behind Nightlife Music Video.
Let's start by introducing our new General
Manager, Kevin Joyce, who joined Nightlife
around four months ago. With a solid
background in the worlds of law, accountancy
and human resources, Kevin is well-placed to
manage the growth of Nightlife Music Video as
we begin our 17th year in the industry.
Kevin has
spent the best part of the last decade working in
the entertainment industry, most recently with
Channel 10's News and Sports production unit
in Sydney and has settled quickly back into his home town of
Brisbane with his wife and two year old daughter. Looking after
the financial side of the business and supporting each of the
departmental managers is Kevin's main focus, but the entire
team is very happy to see that Nightlife is in such capable hands.
None more so than Directors Mark Brownlee and Tim de Souza,
who have now handed over the day to day running of Nightlife to
Kevin and are getting back to what they do best... continually
improving and developing the HDMS™. Both Mark and Tim have
engineering degrees and work closely with our experienced
team of researchers and programmers to keep in step with
emerging technology and ensure you are brought the very best
programmable playing system the world has to offer. In fact, stay
tuned for some major technological advances that are currently
in the pipeline!
The music that Nightlife brings to you is in safe hands too. With
credentials that set the industry standard, our music
programming and production team are constantly searching and
travelling the world to bring you the latest music of every genre.
Nightlife's music director, Wendy Small has been judging in just
about every category of the ARIA Awards since 1993, and also
judges the QRA's Sunnie Awards. Wendy produced a music
video for “Here's Johnny” by Hocus Pocus, which debuted at # 1
on the ARIA charts a few years back, prompting Central Station
Records to present a special plaque in recognition of her
accomplishment. Wendy attends major international music
conferences to keep abreast of trends and, as we reported in
March, was at this year's MIDEM music conference in France.
Our New Releases columnist and music programmer, Ben
Preece, has recently become a regular reviewer for Time-Off
magazine.
And that's only the tip of the credentials iceberg. Nightlife takes
great care to recruit people who understand the culture of customer focus, so you can rest assured you're in capable hands
when you choose to deal with Nightlife Music Video.
Kevin Joyce, GM

Welcome to winter ladies and gentlemen and I know I keep saying
it but the music just keeps getting hotter and hotter. Throw a few of
these on and your dancefloor and venues are guaranteed to stay
scorching......
Dave Grohl and his almighty Foo Fighters
have been belting out quality rock tunes for 10
years now. Already kicking up a ferocious wind
of hype for the new double longplayer In Your
Honour, the boys throw a grenade in our face
with the awesome new single Best Of You.
Singing like it’s his last song ever, Grohl’s
laryngitis-inducing voice sits atop the band's staple of emotive
powerchords and explosive drums and it’s awesome!!! Turn it up,
it’s on RD111. |

More big news this month is the return of the
original funk, soul brother Stevie Wonder
and he’s still as HOT as ever! A Time To Love
is the name of the forthcoming LP which is his
first studio release in nearly 10 years. SoWhat The Fuss is the first, funky-as-hell
single lifted from the album and features
Prince on guitar and En Vogue as guest
backing vocalists. It’s already smashed the record in the US for the highest number of debut spins on radio, surpassing Anita Baker’s
2004 hit You’re My Everything. Check out the video on ED111
and CR111 or maybe you’d prefer the audio only remix featuring
the awesome Q-Tip released last month. |

Using Tarantino movies as a musical reference has always been
cool... hell, it worked for the Fun Lovin’ Criminals on Scooby
Snacks and tell me who doesn’t now know the famous opening
guitar strums on Urge Overkill’s version of that Neil Diamond
song Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon? The latest
offenders are Audio Bullys who have pieced
together Shot You Down, a thumping house
groove over the top of Nancy Sinatra’s original
60’s track Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me
Down) made famous recently in Kill Bill 2.
That’s not all.... the Black Eyed Peas have
hijacked the surfy guitar bit from Dick Dale’s Miserlou (as
featured in Pulp Fiction) for a track called Pump It, a high vibe
party starter from their newly released album Monkey Business.
They’re both part of this month’s CR111. |

Australia’s hottest urban pop act Shakaya
bounce back this month with Are You
Ready, the first single to be lifted from their
forthcoming second album. Featuring a
rap by Nate Wade and written/produced
by the MadNotes, the big shots behind
hits from the likes of Justin Timberlake
and Alicia Keys, Are You Ready is a club-friendly/R&B flavoured
party anthem powered by a hook as irresistible as the girls who
sing it. We had it out two weeks ago on CX111. |

Walk around the Nightlife Music Department
right now and you’re guaranteed to hear the
new Rogue Traders single pumping out of
my corner. The Aussie dance outfit spring
back onto the scene this month with a new
sound, a new attitude and they’ve pulled a
Black Eyed Peas trick by adding a new
member to their lineup - Neighbours star
Natalie Bassingthwaighte. Now they unleash their first effort
together, the electro-rock brilliance of Voodoo Child. No, it’s not
the classic Jimi Hendrix track, it is a cracking dancefloor anthem
based around a sample of Elvis Costello’s Pump It
Up. It was out two weeks ago on CX111 and we’ve
also given you the James Ash Lektric Remix for
your clubbing pleasure. |

DJ Wal - George Hotel.
Geoff Walters, aka DJ Wal may have been with the George Hotel
2000 in Ballarat for less than 12 months, but is an experienced DJ,
having been in the business for 18 years. It was after he'd seen a
very poorly built mobile unit that he decided he could do better,
and that's how it all began back in 1987.
Geoff reckons he'll never turn back now that he's used the HDMS™,
"it's so easy to use, and with the time I save looking for tracks I can
interact with the crowd more than ever before".
Combining DJ gigs with his day job as a computer technician and
his passion for motor racing keeps Geoff on his toes.
|
Incidentally,
Ballarat is one of Australia's largest inland cities with a population
of 65,000. It is also one of Victoria's premier tourist destinations,
attracting visitors mainly for its gold and architectural heritage.
Geoff's fave current song is Everywhere by Moustache, and fave
artist is Anastacia. He would most like to meet Kylie Minogue and
just loves the music she produces. Get well soon Kylie!

Re-organising your playlists
If you want to delete a song from your playlist it’s as easy as
selecting the song and pressing the [Delete] key.
This will delete it only from the current playlist and is not a
permanent deletion. Always remember, when you Skip a song
[F10] it will permanently skip that song and put it into
Search/Skipped Songs.
You can easily re-organise a list to play in the order you want,
working one song at a time, by using [Delete] and [Insert].
If you want to move a song up or down your playlist all you have
to do is highlight the song and press [Delete] on your keyboard;
find the place where you would like to insert it and press the
[Insert] key on your keyboard. The song will then be inserted
above the line that is highlighted.
If you were to press the [Insert] key again straight afterwards it
would insert the same song again on the line above.

News from NZ
All it takes is a huge sporting event to get the country going,
and more particularly, the bars and restaurants who give their
customers the best entertainment possible. The recent Lions
tour of New Zealand was a classic example, and in the last
couple of months we have had huge growth, particularly in the
smaller centres where smaller venues realise that Nightlife is
the answer to their marketing budget. On a per capita basis,
cities like Napier/Hastings are among the most “nightlifed”
places around. For a population of close to 125,000, there are
9 venues with Nightlife, 4 within 150 metres of each other. This
is an example of “hubbing” at its best. A big Nightlife welcome
to The Phoenix in Napier and Jupiters Nightclub in Hastings.
The “Mainlanders” love their rugby too - if the final of the Super
12 was anything to go by - Nightlife venues reported a huge
night - sort of like their own “World Cup Final”. Christchurch is
another great example of Nightlife “hubbing”, and the small
towns down in the South Island also do Nightlife proud -
welcome to new venues The Red Lion in Rangiora and The
Turf Bar and Crusaders Bar, both in Nelson.
Bars are not the only venues who love Nightlife. Les Mills is the
country's leading gym franchise and they now have four gyms
running the Nightlife system, but more on them next month....

APRA Awards
After relocating to Melbourne in 2004, the 14th Annual APRA
Awards ceremony moved back to Sydney this year to honour the
achievements of Australian songwriters, composers and
publishers as voted by their peers.
Missy Higgins was the big winner this year taking out the award for ‘Song Of The Year’ for her superb track Scar as well as the ‘Breakthrough Award’ for emerging talent.
Melbourne band Jet also won two awards. Are You Gonna Be My
Girl won ‘Most Performed Work Overseas’ and the group also
collected ‘Songwriter of the Year’.
Pete Murray won the APRA Award for ‘Most Performed Australian
Work’ for 'So Beautiful' and US band 3 Doors Down picked up ‘Most Performed Foreign Work’ for 'Here Without You'.
Check out the videos for all these songs on a Nightlife system near
you. While you’re there, throw on a few more Aussie tracks and
help promote our local and fruitful industry.
