Aussie Artist Review
Elation

This month we unveil the funky, fresh new sounds of Brisbane band Elation.

Elation explore musical boundaries by combining catchy dance beats with the skills of a tight live band and with the silky smooth vocals of lead singer Elysia Humphries.

To find out what the band is all about, Nightlife chatted with the voice of the band, Elysia. “We wanted to combine a song-based format with grooves you can either chill-out to or get up and dance to.Our songs represent this combination of flavours.” Their musical influences include Moloko, Groove Armada, Dido, Jamiroquai and Morcheeba.

Before Elation was formed, Elysia realised there were few Australian bands producing the type of music that Elation are playing now. She discovered this after a trip to the UK, where she witnessed many bands playing this type of music. Upon her return towards the end of 2002, Elysia formed the band along with Glen Brearley (horns and keys), Dave Orr (guitar), Rohan Staples (bass), and Glen Baker (drums).

Elation have already shared the stage with some well-known acts, including Margaret Urlich, Butterfingers and The Resin Dogs. In 2004, the group ventured on three east coast tours of Australia. “Our best crowds were in Byron Bay and Bondi Beach,” Elysia recalls, “there’s something about the combination of travellers and relaxed ‘beach-going’ locals that really works with our music.”

We asked Elysia about Elation’s live show: “Crowds are very interested in our live set up...we like to use a lot of equipment, as we love making our live sound as interesting as possible. It lifts the dynamics to keep the audience guessing as to where that crazy new sound is coming from.” Elation will be recording their first album in June this year with producer Magoo, who has also produced the likes of Regurgitator and Butterfingers.

Elation’s debut EP ‘Solar Playground’ is out now through Creative Vibes. The songs on this EP are also featured on Nightlife’s HDMS™, specifically on April’s Café update, CF31. DJ Phat’s remix of ‘Driving Away’, an infectious dance track, features as an audio only track on our latest Club Release update, CR109. Check ‘em out! Fresh from playing the Roxy in Parramatta and Beach Palace Hotel, Coogee Beach,

Elation’s upcoming gigs are:
Sat 16 April: The Family, Brisbane
Thur 28 April: Lismore University
Sat 21 May: Beach Hotel, Byron Bay

April New Releases

This month we shine the spotlight on thirstee, a collective of some of Australia’s most talented producers, songwriters and artists coming together to create pop, lounge and funky house beats. Produced by industry heavyweight Michael Szumowski (Disco Montego, Bardot, Guy Sebastian), Just The Way We Are is the funky debut single from the group and showcases a smooth vocal from talented Melbourne newcomer Mikal Johnstone. On CR109 you’ll find the clip which is shot right here in BrisVegas and features a bevy of babes frolicking in the sun. HDMS™ users will also receive the awesome bonus Musik1 House Remix produced by local DJ/producer and Nightlife’s own DJ Bure.

If Hip Hop is more your thing, then check out Fast Crew... they are a group I’m sure you’ll be hearing a lot more about very soon. Hailing from Auckland’s underground inner city Hip Hop scene, these five friends - Dane, Jeremy, Brad, Rebekah and Josh - aren’t gangstas or from mean streets so don’t expect any aggressive raps about bling, bootylicious babes and bad boys, just good tunes about living life and having fun that will make you bounce and get you grooving. Their debut single I Got was a hit about 6 months ago in their native land but it has finally hit our shores and appears on CR109.

I was lucky enough to catch the Perth group Little Birdy live twice recently - once during their national support slot for R.E.M. and also at their own headliner here in Brisbane. I’ve had a soft spot for these guys since I first heard them on the J’s with their debut album BigBigLove, along with their previous EPs, becoming some of my faves of last year. Pint-sized front girl Katy Steele not only has a uniquely sweet and equally powerful voice that evokes shades of Chrissie Amphlett but she is possibly the spunkiest little rock chick to strap on a Telecaster in quite a while. This month on RD109 we release Excited, the 3rd single to be lifted from the aforementioned album. It’s a bit of fun with Katy and the boys crawling out of a TV and even indulging in a bit of a boogie.

Still on cool bands with spunky front ladies... back in 2001 Garbage gave us their 3rd album beautifulgarbage, full of awesome little pop/rock songs that left some of their fans yearning for the hard hitting Garbage of old. This month they turn their amps back up to eleven and deliver Why Do You Love Me, their hardest single in ages. Lead singer Shirley Manson is in awesome form as she delivers verses of pop pleasantness, before powering through the frantic chorus like a woman possessed. The single is a welcome return to their original hard rock sound and raises expectations for their forthcoming LP Bleed Like Me. Until then, you can play the song from RD109 and CX109.

It’s good to see dance music slowly making a welcome return to the market and this month our programs are full of great new tracks and bonus club mixes for the DJs. In particular, check out the song by Hamburg’s Disco Boys. Raphael and Gordon are among Germany’s most successful DJs and mix a unique combination of original disco tunes, eighties tracks and popular house classics, together with the hottest new house and electro beats. So when they show up with their record cases, you know you’re in for a long party night. On CR109 they deliver the Bruce Springsteen penned For You, their club-compatible take on Manfred Mann’s Earth Band classic, featuring the vocals from the original track.

DJ Zeke - The Nitey.
DJ Zeke is the name, and at 17, playing funky music is the game! After starting with two turntables and a mixer at the tender age of
13, Zeke Ugle has only been using Nightlife's HDMS™ for 6 months, but reckons “it's the best thing since sliced bread and makes work a whole lot easier! You get a heap of people requesting songs and using the HDMS™ is much quicker than searching through a CD collection!”

Zeke is currently studying IT as well as mixing the tunes at the recently re-named Nitey Niteclub (some will remember it as The Circuit, one of Geraldton's premier night spots). His long-term goal is to move to Perth to explore his career in IT, and get a DJ position at one of the top nightclubs there to indulge his passion for music.

Meanwhile, Zeke names his fave artist as Michael Jackson (no surprises there!) and fave song of all time as Tag Team's WHOOMP! (There It Is)'.
