Audio?
We Hear You!
How can Nightlife provide
you with chilled audio only music when
after all these years we've been delivering
commercial music
video? You know we’ve always been
the innovators when it
comes to new technology to play music
video, and the same
applies to the sort of music we supply.
No business can survive if
it is stuck in the old ways, and Nightlife
Music Video is no
exception.
Since 1989 we have been
listening to you! We have
progressively changed and developed the
playing systems to
make sure they really work for you. So,
when boutique venues,
cafes and bars found that niche music
is what they needed, we
started delivering audio only as well.
First
of all Nightlife secured an ARIA Licence
giving us the right to
'COPY' all music (audio only) within
the ARIA repertoire. (But
remember, you still need to pay APRA & PPCA
fees to ‘PLAY’ the
music.) You can find out which labels/majors
(copyright owners)
can be supplied to you by a company such
as ourselves, by
going to:
www.aria.com.au/pages/documents/sound_recording_label_list.pdf
If
anyone tries to supply you with music
outside of this list, you
should ask them if they have direct licensing
to copy all the music
they supply. Otherwise they may be breaching
copyright, and the
consequences of getting involved with
that are definitely not
worth the risk.
Any
label/major that is not in the ARIA
recording label list cannot be copied. That
is why Nightlife goes out into the
big bad world to sign on these labels
directly. We now have direct licences
with labels in San Francisco, New York,
France, Germany, Italy, Ireland plus
quite a few niche labels in Australia. If
you subscribe to our audio programs,
you can rest assured that all the music
is legally licensed. Plus
much of the music is unique to the
Australian market as it is supplied
only on our Hard Drive Music Systems
(HDMS).
Nightlife's
Music Director, Wendy
Small, was at the recent MIDEM
music conference in France and is
pictured here with Aussie mates,
Morgan Williams from Central
Station Records and Glen Navratil
from MRA Entertainment. During her
visit, Wendy showcased our HDMS
to some international labels, sealed
a few deals and educated some
Germans about another famous
Australian export, Kylie Minogue!
More and more labels
are signing on with Nightlife each month.
The security of the music offered by
the HDMS™, our reporting
system for quarterly royalties, and the
sheer attraction of the
HDMS™'s features and benefits all add
up to make the signing of
new labels so easy.
There is only one Hard Drive Music System
in the world that can
do what Nightlife's HDMS™ does, and that
is why we are exporting
to the USA and New Zealand. Not only
that, we also have venues
in the UK and Ireland clamouring to sign
on. Watch this space…

Oh My Gosh! The Jaxx are back with
another funky slice of technicolour pop.
Fresh from wowing festival audiences from
Glastonbury to Rio with their brilliant live
show, Basement Jaxx have barely paused
for breath before unleashing the quirky
charms of new single Oh My Gosh, which is full
of their
signature twisted vocals and an infectious vocal
from Vula
Malinga. This is the curtain raiser for their
forthcoming
collection The Singles and is an awesome flashback
to that
shiny-disco-Janetesque-Jam & Lewis-80’s
soul sound we all
know and love. Give it a play from CR108. |

Representing Houston, Texas in the good ol’ US
of A is 19 year old Brooke Valentine, who may
very well be the next young, hot R&B
chanteuse. This month the new crunk
princess on the block releases her Lil Jonproduced
and Big Boi-guested debut single
Girlfight. The ‘rhythm and crunk’ party
starter brews tension
between two groups of women that finally festers
into an all out
street brawl which, according to Brooke, is a
real life
experience where she actually snatched out somebody’s
earrings. The track is lifted from her debut
album Chain Letter
which will be released soon. Play the video now
from CR108. |

Beck has to be one of the funkiest white
boys on the planet and the most
innovat ive man in rockpopsoul
dancehiphopcountry. This month he
follows the brilliance of his acoustic album
Sea Change and returns back to his
eclectic roots with his first single in three
years E-Pro. Mr Hansen has again teamed up with
producers
the Dust Brothers that sees the team behind 1996’s
brilliant
Odelay reunited. Find it on RD108. |

.... And the most brilliantly annoying catchy
song of the month award goes to Booty La La
by Bugz In The Attic. BITA are a nine strong
super crew of West London producers who
are currently dominating dancefloors across
the UK with this anthem. Combining sassy
soul with a Basement Jaxx inspired quirkiness,
this song is set
to blow up big time and, as far as I’m
concerned, it makes
sense for you to play this song right now...
on CR108. |

More dance music ahoy! This
month’s
programs are abundant in the good ol’ dance
tune. There’s great new cuts from Groove
Coverage, Harvey Milk, Ian Van Dahl, Soul
Central, Lazy Boy, Inaya Day, Midnight
Star plus some awesome audio only bonus
remixes from Britney, J.Lo, Mario and Lovefreekz.

There’s also no shortage
of classic old tunes
that have been reworked for the dancefloor.
Firstly, Cabin Crew’s Star 2 Fall is one
of two
versions (the other is Falling Star by the
Sunset Strippers - coming soon) giving the
80’s Boy Meets Girl classic Waiting For
A
Star To Fall the house treatment. Smash ‘N’ Grab’s
She
Don’t Like That puts an unexpected twist
into Australian
Crawl’s Reckless. But that’s not
all... HDMS™ users will find the
Nirvana 1991 ground breaker Smells Like Teen
Spirit
getting the Warp Brothers treatment.

DJ Dynamic - Hahndorf
Inn.
Dynamic by name
and obviously by nature too, that's if Mike
Warner's busy schedule is any indication. When
not
entertaining the patrons at the charming Hahndorf
Inn in the
beautiful Adelaide Hills with Nightlife's HDMS™,
DJ Dynamic
runs his own AV hire company, does radio DJ mixes
for Nova
91.9 FM in Adelaide and hosts a radio show on
5UV called 'The
Aerosol Hour'. Mike, 22, also finds time to relax
with his mates,
get to the beach, movies and go cruising.

Fave song of all time is Around The World by Daft
Punk and
fave current song is How We Do from The Game feat.
50 Cent.
And, like so many of the DJs we feature in this newsletter,
Michael Jackson is Mike's favourite artist of all
time. The one
person Mike would really love to meet is Mix Master
Mike and
reckons this guy is an absolute gun DJ.

At Your Service
Cleaning Up Your Music Lists
The year is flying along and we would like to take
this
opportunity to remind you about the pre-programmed
Nightlife lists that are available on the HDMS™. We
have an
abundance of lists that have been created to set
the right mood
for your venue. For instance the recently introduced
SURFnCITY list covers the acoustic driven music boom
that is
happening at the moment with artists such as Jack
Johnson,
Ben Harper and Pete Murray.
Note: The Nightlife WARM_UP
list is no longer updated... Clients may remember
a list called WARM_UP on our
catalogue. This list is no longer kept current by
your monthly
DVD-ROM update and as such we have decided to retire
it. If
you still have WARM_UP in your scheduler or available
lists,
please call us if you need help to give it the flick.
We can also
help clean up your custom user lists for you.
Don't
forget, custom user lists, or lists you have created
yourself, are not automatically updated with our
monthly DVDROM.
We recommend you use pre-programmed Nightlife
lists and remove the music that you find unsuitable
with the
F10 'skipped songs' function.
As we said before, there
is a huge selection of lists available that
have already been compiled by Nightlife. These lists
include BAR_TUNES which is a larger style Happy Hour
list
designed to get your patrons tapping their toes;
HOTEL_MIX
is a mix of the latest and hottest music available
with the Top
100 used to great effect here as well; and last but
not least,
CLUB_RnB which is a great list to get the dancefloor
packed
and pumping in no time.
If you would like to view
all the lists available in our catalogue,
simply enter the Lists menu and arrow down to the
bottom to
find View Nightlife Lists. For more information
about any of
the topics we have touched upon, please don't hesitate
to give
our friendly customer service team a call on 1800

News from NZ
Over the last 12 months we have
been releasing the NZX
update to you on pretty much a monthly basis. This
was to
ensure that Top 40 Kiwi music hit the venues and
also to build
up the classic library of archival videos plus classic
audio
tracks that we had gained access to.
The feedback
from DJs and managers alike has been very
encouraging and it's rewarding to witness first
hand these
songs being played loud and proud when we visit
venues. The
connection between young people and old music never
ceases to amaze us - must be something to do with
them being
able to hear when in the womb!
Now that we are getting
close to the end of our list of requested
audio tracks and the classic archival footage,
a monthly
release is no longer warranted. So, from now
on, we will only
release on an 'as required' basis. This will
depend upon how
well Kiwi artists perform chartwise, and equally
as important,
depend upon DJ demand.
The feedback sheets are
there, as is our fax machine and
email, so keep talking to us and we will keep
you up with the
latest and greatest.
Happy New Year!
