Aussie Artist Review
Little Birdy
This month we feature another
fantastic Aussie band from Perth, Little Birdy
who have
gained success in a relatively
short amount of time. Their debut album entitled, “BigBigLove” was
released on October 4th with instant success,
roaring in at
number five on the national ARIA chart.
Forming
in the early part of 2002, Little Birdy’s
line up includes lead singer/guitarist,
Katy Steele, who happens
to be the sister
of The Sleepy Jackson singer Luke Steele.
The Sleepy Jackson, along with Eskimo
Joe, were also local bands
emerging at the time. Alongside Katy, you
have Simon Leach
(an old friend of Katy’s) on guitar,
Scott O’Donoghue on bass
and Matt Chequer slamming those drums.
In
October 2003, Little Birdy’s
self-titled debut EP was
released. Two tracks from this
EP, namely “Relapse” and
“
Baby Blue” were successfully
voted into Triple J’s Hottest
100 that year. The EP also
spent 10 weeks atop the indie
chart. March 2004 saw the
release of their “This Is A Love
Song” EP.
The title track
became one of the most requested songs
on Triple J. This
song also peaked at number 22 on the
national ARIA chart.
Little
Birdy have made quite a name for
themselves as a live
act, playing at the Livid and Homebake
festivals, as well as
Perth’s Big Day Out of 2004.
They have also supported high
profile bands such as Placebo, Morcheeba
and The Cruel
Sea.
Following
their own sellout national tour, the band
travelled
around Australia as special guests
of The Dissociatives, who
are signed to the same label, Eleven
Records. You can find
three of Little Birdy’s tunes
on Nightlife’s
HDMS™.
“Baby
Blue” appears on CRX92 and ED92, “This
Is A Love
Song” on RD97 and the first
single from the new album,
“
Beautiful To Me”, features on JB87,
RD102 and ED103. Their
brand new single “Tonight’s
The Night”, set for release
on November 29th, can be found
on this
month’s
RD104.

Welcome to November ladies and gents and boy have we got
some tunes for you! It's all killer and no filler this month with a TON
of music flooding the Nightlife doorways!
The wait is over! Gwen Stefani has finally
unleashed her highly-anticipated and hella
cool debut solo video What You Waiting For?
The divine No Doubt frontwoman teamed up
with former 4 Non Blonde, Linda Perry to pen
this 80's influenced dance track. The song is all
about Gwen's nervousness in branching out
from No Doubt to launch her solo career. It starts sounding like a
piano driven love ballad before the beat kicks in. And what a beat!
Not the sort you'd usually associate with No Doubt but a jumping
club beat with multiple layers of "tick-tocks" and "la-la-las" to make
this one catchy summer dancefloor smash. It's from her debut
album Love, Angel, Music, Baby and features on CR104.

With a new major label contract, a sell-out 'tour of the year' and a
rediscovered freshness on his outstanding album Musicology,
2004 has definitely been an amazing year for Prince as he
reclaims his crown as funk king. Now he caps off
his year with a spot of controversy with the release
of the Cinnamon Girl video. It features Whale
Rider star Keisha Castle-Hughes portraying an
Arab-American who is forced to deal with
victimisation in a post 9/11 world and who has nightmares of
blowing up an airport with a suicide bomb. As you'd imagine, the
video has caused a media outcry and some have labelled it the
most tasteless video ever. Beyond the controversy, the video is
attractively shot with live action in front of an impressionistic
landscape. It really looks great and the track itself is one of my
faves from a brilliant album. You be the judge, it's on CR104.

Brisbane four-piece The Boat People are moving ahead in leaps
and bounds and their new single Tell Someone Who Cares is yet
another slice of radio-pop perfection. With a style
that lands somewhere between Crowded House
and Radiohead, the Boaties are already getting a
flogging with the song on Triple J. Penned by
talented tunesmith James O'Brien and produced
by Jonathon Burnside (The Sleepy Jackson),
the track is lifted from the hugely anticipated debut
album coming soon. The mind blowing video is composed entirely
of still photos of the band and is made up of around five and half
thousand photographs. It has to be seen to be believed! You can
believe it on RD104.

The ever-popular formula of dusting off a crusty old classic,
ripping off its chorus and adding a thumping dance beat is one that
has proven to be successful for quite a few years now. The trend
continues this month on CR104 with the release of Out Of Touch
by UK duo Uniting Nations. Originally a 1984 #1 hit for Hall &
Oates, the track gets the clubland treatment using that discohouse
style that seems to be sneaking back into the mainstream.

And if it's familiar sounds you're looking for this
summer, your favourite artists are certain to keep
you happy with a whole bunch of cover versions...
Britney makes 's Bobby Brown's My Prerogative
personal, Christina teams up with Missy for Car
Wash, Korn covers the Cameo classic Word Up,
A Perfect Circle deliver John Lennon's peace
plea Image and Ronan Keating croons
Leeann Womack's I Hope You Dance. And if
you picked the bassline to Nelly and Cristina's
sexy duet Tilt Ya Head Back as being swiped
from Curtis Mayfield's classic jam Superfly,
then you'd be right. I'm impressed! All of the above
and more on your November programs.... See ya in
December! |

DJ Matt -
Railway Hotel -
Sports Bar Warragul.
It was during a stint in Community Radio back in the early 90s
that Matt Tipping was first asked to DJ. "That was at the old
Astradome Nightclub in Traralgon, one of the best in its day."
Nowadays he keeps the Sports Bar patrons entertained at the
Railway Hotel in Warragul, a lively town in Gippsland, Victoria.
|
Matt reckons DJing with the Nightlife system is
a breeze. "It's
great how you can cue so quickly and it gives you more time to
talk to the chicks (haha). I often change my mind about which
song to play next only 20 seconds before the one playing is
due to finish. You can't do that using decks or CDs!"
Matt's other interests include hanging out with
his 9 year-old daughter Shadia, watching the Simpsons
and Jerry on cable,
and AFL, "carn the pies - we love you Eddie!".

Naked
in the USA
Nightlife's Music Director, Wendy Small, travelled to the US in
October to talk to Naked Music and attend a music conference
in New York, then across to Seattle to meet our partners,
ScreenPlay Inc. Here's Wendy's brief report on her visit:
"Naked Music distribute through Creative Vibes in Australia,
although Creative Vibes cannot give permission to companies
to copy Naked Music releases. The only way to bring you the
smooth grooves of Naked was for Nightlife to go to New York
and show them our HDMS™ on the laptop. They were over the
moon about how much time and energy Nightlife spends on
ensuring our systems are safe and secure for their music. Our
Club and Café releases will soon be feeling the Naked beat.
"The CVC@CMJ Music Conference in New York focussed on
'Where and how to get your music videos seen and heard by
the public.' It not only covered the usual areas of television, the
net and cable, but also promoted 'thinking outside the square',
which is where Nightlife comes in - entertainment venues!!!
"Seattle is a beautiful place and the setup at ScreenPlay is
very impressive. They supply DVDs with music video, movie
trailers, nature footage, you name it, to over 25,000 outlets.
They just debuted at number 58 in the Top 100 fastest growing
companies in Washington State and now they are distributing
Nightlife across the USA! It gave me a great sense of pride to
see Nightlife being used in some of the nightclubs I visited. It's
an exciting place to be right now. the world is our oyster!"
Technically
Speaking
We've upgraded our HDMS™ software version and it's on your
November DVD along with your music updates.
Whilst there have been a few software
improvements, the main change you will see is the
in the Volume Indicator
bottom left hand corner next to the date.
This is shown as four blue bars
that indicate when the volume is turned up or down
via [Ctrl][V], or by the remote control
keyring if you have one. If using [Ctrl][V[, the up and down
arrow keys will adjust the volume.
News from NZ
Introducing our new receptionist, Jody Thomas. With the
recent growth in new business, Jody will also be assisting
JoArna in the Call Centre. JoArna will still be your first point of
contact for support while Jody hones her technical skills.
Best wishes to Bob and Janet Pulham
and the team at Christchurch's newest video bar -
Iconic. We also look forward
to hearing reports from Mad Dogs & Englishmen, St Lukes
who are upgrading their sound and video to strengthen the
Nightlife dimension in their entertainment package. A big
welcome, in fact, to all the new venues coming on board in the
next few months.
In the meantime, keep your tobacco
dry, and we trust that your plans for accommodating
the new No Smoking legislation are
all in place!
Regards,
