Nightlife Territory
The Northern Territory is big, we all know that. It crosses three
time zones and millions of square kilometres. It is home to
jackaroos, backpackers and eccentrics and it is hot. Damn hot.
What you probably didn't know is that, per head of population,
it can arguably claim to have more Nightlife Music Systems
than any other area in Australia.
From Lasseters Casino to Shenannigans in Darwin, Nightlife's
Hard Drive Music System has become a cost-effective music
management tool for a host of diverse businesses. It is the
sheer size and remoteness of the Territory that has led them to
embrace the HDMS™. They can be 5000 km from nowhere and
still have new music at the same time as it's released to the
Sydney and Melbourne clubs.
The HDMS™ also allows venues to operate without DJs or,
better still, have their own staff members program a seamless
mix of DJ music. Of course, the savings on DJ wages are
considerable but the real payoff can be that using team
members can create an interactive atmosphere. Patrons are
more comfortable making song requests and the staff get
more involved which often results in these 'Party Bars' having
the sort of energy that means big money to the bottom line.
This month we profile three Darwin venues that all share the
Territory's love of a good time, but use their HDMS™ in very
different ways. The Turtle Bar at the Beachfront Hotel is the
newest hot spot in Darwin and the only hotel on the oceanfront.
This thriving party bar is built around the Nightlife Jukebox.
Manager Anthony Serpo and his team have programmed the
juke to reflect the different trading patterns of the room. They
don't have to worry about the wrong song being played by a
punter with dubious taste, because the system will only let
them choose from a preferred list. On Saturdays they even
have a retro list that matches the weird wigs that the staff don
for the occasion.
At the Ducks Nuts the look is urban lounge with a distinctly Top
End flavour. The alfresco atmosphere allows you to indulge in
the passing parade of Darwin. Ducks offers a smart casual
innovative dining experience and programs its HDMS™ to reflect
this. As the afternoon shadows lengthen along Mitchell Street
cool cocktail tracks drift into adult party tunes.
Finally we have the Hog's Breath
Cafe. "There are many things we
have done, but we ain't never had too
much fun". It's an expression of a
philosophy that has made Hog's
Breath a tear-away success story.
Nightlife is a natural partner, and
Damien Peterson, the franchisee has
tailored the HDMS™ to reflect their
unique style. An iconic feature is the
Hog's Breath logos and branding.
The inbuilt advertising flashes billboards to the plasma
screens and televisions throughout the cafe. Patrons get a
chuckle from the cartoon hog as they tap their toes.

It's awesome to see that dance music isn't completely dead and is
still managing to squeeze out a couple of pearlers here and there.
You can't go past Eric Prydz's sensational new video for the
dancefloor scorcher Call on Me. If you ever
thought gym was boring then think again.
Featuring a class of stunning gymnasts who
certainly know a thing or two about a good
workout, the song is hotly tipped to become
the dance track of the year. You're
wondering where the familiar chorus comes
from? Well, it was originally a 1982 smash hit for
Steve Winwood called Valerie(check it out on your Nightlife system). When
Winwood heard the remix he thought it was so good he not only
gave his permission to use the samples, he even re-recorded his
vocals especially for the track. It's on CR103. |

Apart from
robust cars ABBA, Roxette, and
Ace Of Base, Sweden hasn't exactly been at
the forefront of creativity and artistic flair. Enter
dance producer Stonebridge who, with a
resume featuring the likes of Enrique, Will
Smith, Lenny Kravitz and De La Soul, knows
what it takes to fill a dancefloor. Now he gives us his own
infectious, pop-tastic, Kylie-esque number Put 'Em High.
Featuring the sweet vocals of Swedish stunner Therese, this tune
has been rocking dancefloors and airwaves during the recent
European Summer and is now gearing up to do the same Down
Under. Do your ears a favour and give it a spin from .

German producer Mousse T. is back, proving he still has an ear for
a killer tune. You'll remember him from such fabulousness as Horny
and the Tom Jones collaboration, Sex Bomb (both on
Nightlife!). This time he's skipped genres and produced the bright,
bubblegum cheese track
Is It Cos I'm Cool? Combining a laid back, guitar-driven sound with
Roxette-meets-Basement Jaxx-meets-T-Rex
partyrisms, the song wraps a sweet vocal from
Emma Lanford
around biting chorus making it a
kick-ass attitude track. To keep the DJ's smiling
we've also released the So Phat! Mix which goes
in a more recognisable direction leading you to
the dancefloor. All this and more on

Ciari is the latest scene stealer on the R&B stage
and has it all - beauty, irresistible songwriting, an
attention-grabbing voice and killer dance-moves.
She's being dubbed as the First Lady Of 'Crunk &
B' and admits that when she first heard the
Lil'
Jon
created crunk beat she was given, she was a
little hesitant to try to write a song to it. But she did and the result,
My Goodies, is already number 1 in the States and is sure to shoot
up the charts here too. Rowdy rappers would be in tune with 'Crunk
& B', the high-energy party sound and, like Usher's Yeah My
Goodies,
is establishing the newly created genre which
Lil' Jon takes credit for. The song gives the 18 year old singer from Atlanta
a chance to deliver a message to guys who try to win girls over with
flashy cars and bling-bling. Play it from CX103. |

Marilyn Manson first gained attention back in 1995
with a cover of the Eurythmics classic
Sweet Dreams. Hoping that lightning strikes twice (or even
three times if you count his 2002 cover of Soft Cell 's
Tainted Love), Marilyn and Co. continue their 80's
obsession with another cover recorded as the 'new'
track for its forthcoming best of collection,
Lest We Forget. Dephe Mode's Personal Jesus is the
latest track to get the dark and sinister treatment from
the shock rocker, but it doesn't actually vary much
from the original. Play it from
RD103. |

DJ Ian -
Grand Boulevard Tavern -
Perth.
At 42, Ian Jeffrey is a busy man. He juggles selling cars by day
with DJing by night, and has been with the folk who run the
Grand Boulevard Tavern in Joondalup (a northern suburb of
Perth) for 7 years now. When the Tavern took on Nightlife's
HDMS™ a few months back, Ian was a welcome addition to the
growing list of DJ's converted to Nightlife.
|
Starting his DJ profession in a skating rink 25 years ago (oh,
the memories!) Ian's favourite music is anything old and funky.
Fave artist is George Benson, although Freestylers' Push Up
gets his vote for fave song of the moment.
Apart from music, it's not hard to pick the direction of Ian's
other passion in life. Among his interests he lists motor bikes,
his dream car as a Ferrari, and the person he'd most like to
meet as Michael Schumacher!

News from NZ
It needs a lot of vision to take an old bank building, completely
refurbish it, and open it as a hospitality venue at the wrong end
of town. It wasn't even a licensed premises to begin with!
Go forward 10 years and not only celebrate your first decade in
business, but also that you are now at the right end of town!
A few years after the initial opening, add to this the ambitious
project of launching one of the country's best student bars,
then developing a large, convivial bar/restaurant and one can
begin to get an understanding of the expertise and
commitment involved.
But there is no shortage of competition. A major franchise hits
town and takes him head on - big time. It's ugly, but there is
only one winner.
Next, he heads to the deep south, fearless of the Mainlander's
grip on the local economy, and takes ownership of a
neighbouring bar.
So who is this man? None other than... Richard Bate. Whom,
we are proud to claim, was our first ever Nightlife NZ client!
Heartiest congratulations Richard, from the Nightlife Team.
Regards,
The NZ Team |

Hatches Matches & Hard Drives
Corny headline, but hey, there's no stopping 'em at Nightlife so it
seems…. We've got three more weddings and a birth in the
Nightlife 'family' to report upon.
Our newsletter graphics man and HDMS™ trouble-shooter, Te Lee
wed his sweetheart Christine in July. Accounts darling, Ms
Heatherbell married her prince charming, Paul Fanani in
September and is now known as Mrs Heatherbell (because we
can never get the surname right!). Then, as we go to press in mid
October, National Sales Manager, Dewayne Montey is marrying
the stunning Miss Angie Tocco in a ceremony at Currumbin Beach
on the Gold Coast.
Capping off all the excitement was the recent birth of Molly Dent,
the beautiful daughter of Simon (music production gnome) and
his wife Michelle. The poor child is already being spoilt rotten by all
her Nightlife 'aunties' & 'uncles', and with a staff of close to 40 at
Nightlife in Brisbane alone, there is no shortage of doting
admirers.

Yes, the Nightlife 'family' has grown considerably in the last
couple of years, and it's all thanks to another Nightlife 'baby', the
HDMS™, born back in 2001. Here's some facts you may not realise:
Did you know that all the Hard Drive Music Systems and
Jukeboxes are built in-house here at NMV headquarters in
Brisbane? Our manufacturing team of 9 has an average
production run of 130 HDMS™ and 15 Jukes a month. We have 5
music experts in our production and programming team
constantly researching and checking for the latest music trends to
bring you the hottest and most sought after playlists and
programs. The Customer Support Centre currently boasts 7,
which means you are guaranteed the best damn service in the
business - always! Not to mention Sales and Marketing (6), Admin
and Accounts (6), R & D and IT (5).
Did you know we've grown that big? Well, it's come as a bit of a
surprise to us too! We've come a long way in 15 years baby!
