Qld... A State
Of Diversity
Queensland is one of the largest
states in Australia, stretching thousands
of kilometres from the NSW border to Weipa.
Nightlife has over 200 Qld clients ranging
from cool urban bars and outback watering
holes to island resorts. This month we
profile two very different businesses,
both belong to Qld groups that have come
to regard the HDMS™ as a part of their formula
for success, but who use it in very different
ways.

Part of the Fitzgibbons Hotels group,
Fringe Bar in The Valley offers Brisbane clubbers
several experiences
in one evening. From soft, warm furnishings and modern
groovy décor downstairs, to the intimate charm
of individual upstairs pool rooms and balconies,
The Fringe is the place to meet friends and chill,
lounge, groove or dance until 5am.
Two Nightlife HDMS™’s play an integral part
in providing the optimum ambience at Fringe Bar.
One uses the Pro DJ Numark controller which allows
the cutting edge DJs to mix seamlessly between audio
CDs and music video clips, whilst the second is used
to vary the music format on the 2nd level often used
for functions.
Mike Kilpatrick says, “Having two separate
systems allows for total flexibility to cater to
a wider patronage without compromising the consistency
of the downstairs atmosphere. With over 5,000 songs
on each database there is ample variety, and all
four DJs have access to the same music base whilst
still being able to add their own individual flair
to their music delivery and presentation.”
A legendary chain of North Queensland venues is
Cactus Jack's. These are not your average Mexican
restaurants; the owners have developed a unique Tex/Mex
flavour that refuses to be pigeonholed. You realise
that you are in for something different as soon as
you walk through the doors. Minimalism is a dirty
word here. The room is a riot of colour and a visual
feast of knick-knacks gathered during the world travels
of the owners Jon and Sharon Van Grinsven. Pottery,
paintings and even a whole crocodile skin adorn the
walls.
Nightlife's HDMS™ has been put into the two new restaurants.
Both have installed plasma screens, which seem very
much at home among the bric-a-brac. Cactus Jack's
is certainly not trying to be a nightclub, the emphasis
is on a smooth ‘favourites mix' over meal times
automatically moving to a more up-tempo mix after
service. Townsville manager Tim Alsop says, "We
are aiming to keep our patrons longer and the HDMS™
has done that for us. We wouldn't open another venue
without it."
No matter what type of venue you operate, Nightlife
can tailor an entertainment solution to suit. Call
1800 679 748 today.

We have all been waiting some time now for
a video to be released for Solitaire’s
I Like Love (I Love Love), but unfortunately
the decision has been made that this will never
happen. However, there is some good news, with
your update disc this month (HDMS™ only), you
will receive a little treat.... we have released
an audio only extended mix of the song licensed
through Central Station Records. If you have
an HDMS™, you will be noticing more remixes and
bonus audio only tracks from now on. |

More good news... hats off to our music director,
Wendy Small, who sweated blood to access and
rush release the new Kylie Minogue video for
Red Blooded Woman. The video was shot in Los
Angeles and directed by Jake Nava who won an
MTV Video Music Award for his work on Beyonce’s
Crazy In Love video. The song is a sexy piece
of R&B/pop and is possibly the stand-out
track from Kylie’s 9th studio album Body
Language. |

Hailing from California, Baby Bash is the next
big thing emerging from the Latino Rap scene
and is ready to crossover to mainstream stardom
with this smash single, Suga Suga. This is from
his 3rd album release called The Smokin’ Nephew
and features the smooth vocals of Frankie J.
It has already secured a top position
on USA’s Billboard Hot 100 and is sure to explode here in Australia too.
Check it from CR95. |

Also out this month is Toxic, the newest and
probably the raunchiest video so far from Britney
Spears. It features Brit as an air stewardess/secret
agent strutting the aisles, slinking on motorcycles,
stealing secrets and singing about her toxic
boys. The video was directed by Joseph Kahn who
is one of today’s biggest and most respected
music video directors This will certainly grab
your patrons’ attention for at least 3
minutes. See it now from CR95. |

When we
think of new talent, we automatically think
of the likes of Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll,
who of course, are cleaning up in the music
scene. But, if one new talent will challenge
Australian Idol participants, then it will
be Shaneal. Born in the USA, but growing up
in Brisbane, Shaneal has been around the music
scene for a while, having achieved two Top
10 singles overseas. This includes a number
3 slot in the UK in 2002, with a song called
Lies. He featured on this track with the group
Bombsquad. Now is his official debut single,
a very catchy
R&B dance, party jam sure to have party people putting their hands up. Check
it out now from CR95 and ED95. |

| On
CRX95 two weeks ago we released Good Luck from
Basement Jaxx, which is the 2nd single and
possibly the best song from their 3rd and latest
album Kish Kash. Lisa Kekaula (from US garage
band Bellrays) is given full vocal freedom
here and she delivers, hollering a fearsome
ode to a former lover. Seeing these guys perform
this song at Big Day Out last month only reinforced
the strength of the
tune... awesome stuff! |

Question...
What makes a good video? Answer... Parachuting
babies (with milk on the brain) heading straight
for a rather attractive, half naked lady writhing
around in a field. All this and more in the
video to the Boogie Pimps’ fantastic
pop/house version of Somebody To Love. Sound
familiar? Well it should, because
it’s the classic 1967 psychedelic hit from Jefferson Airplane, and who
can forget the karaoke performance Jim Carrey gave of the song in the Cable Guy?
Well I remembered it. Give the song a play from CRX95. |

DJ Lizard -
The london Shed.
Introducing the legendary Aaron Calman,
aka 'DJ Lizard' of The London Shed, Auckland
NZ. The name Lizard came from Jim Morrison who
proclaimed 'I am The Lizard King, I can do Anything'.
Lizard met The Doors in LA, and has Robbie Krieger's
autograph tattooed on his left shoulder alongside
The Doors logo and Jim Morrison's poetry!
|
In his early clubbing days Lizard decided the DJ
had the best job in the bar and after enquiring was
told to get equipped and go out mobile DJing, so
he did. He's been using the HDMS™ for 6 months and
has all the video inputs fully loaded; utilising
a DVD player and video camera as part of his action
packed visual show. The Numark controller was a recent
welcomed addition to his array of entertainment tools.
Favourite artists are Red Hot Chili Peppers, fave
song of all time is 'Alive' by Pearl Jam and Lizard
would most like to meet Eddie Vetter to just say
thanks and Kylie Minogue for obvious reasons! His
most memorable night DJing was supporting the band
'Pacifier' during a live gig.

KEEPING
THINGS CURRENT
This month we move away from our usual “let's
shed some light on tech issues” angle and focus
instead on another equally important factor that
will help you to get the most efficient service we
can offer!
It might not seem the uppermost thing in your mind
when using your Nightlife Music Video System, but
keeping us informed of any changes and developments
your venue undergoes, helps us to ensure you get
the most out of your system, as well as efficient
support when you need it.
For example: if your venue has recently changed
from a bar to a club; your billing address has changed;
or your venue manager has recently moved on, by keeping
us in the loop it will help us to ensure your updates
are changed to suit your venue; send your statements
to the right place; and ask for the right person
when we need to return your calls!
Keeping us updated is easy. All you need to do is
send us a quick email: talk2us@nightlife.com.au or
even easier, call our Customer Support Centre hotline
on 1800 773 468 and speak to one of our friendly
consultants who will amend your records on the spot.
At the same time, if you have new staff at the venue,
you can give us their names and book a phone training
session with us to get them up to speed on the Nightlife
Music Video System.
Whatever the changes in your venue might be, it
is in your best interests to keep us up to date;
because if we know what you're up to, we can make
sure we do our best to help you reach your goals!
News From NZ
February sees the release of the
next NZX update and we trust that you enjoy this
additional service. As previously mentioned the NZX
update is a combination of New Zealand music, both
old and new, and classic music from international
artists and will be released to you as we procure
these hard to find archival videos.
Unfortunately, many of the old classic songs may
not have an accompanying video clip available, so
the ability to get these sought after clips isn't
foolproof, but believe us, we really do try.
In terms of the latest release New Zealand music,
we need feedback from YOU, our customer, as to what
you want. There is a lot of Kiwi music on the charts,
but being such a small market it is relatively easy
to achieve this (relatively!) and as a result, a
fair portion of this music may not have commercial
or mainstream application. We want to hear from you
- so please send us your feedback sheets, emails,
faxes - phone us.
Meanwhile, please also check the status of your
back up system, ie. the ability to go to another
source of music in the event that we have to do technical
diagnostics on your HDMS™. Is your backup library
in place and in the booth?
