Setting
The Standard
The Victoria
Hotel at O'Halloran Hill, South Australia
has recently reopened
after undergoing a $3m redevelopment
during which the Saturno Hotels transformed
the formerly “tired” venue
into a contemporary style hotel with
a strong deco influence.
|
Among the many unique features inw the reinvented
venue is a massive video screen, which is actually
a set of large opaque glass doors that discreetly
close off the nightclub section when it's not trading.
Nightlife Music Video clips are screened onto these
doors courtesy of a rear projector. Other stunning
features include a waterfall as visitors enter through
the main atrium, raised polished jarrah floors, lots
of polished chrome, a single wrap-around bar featuring
mother of pearl inlaid terrazzo bar tops, and a sunken
dining area with open fireplace and view overlooking
the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
And, of course, there’s the “Pokie Brothers” gaming
lounge and the now famous “Booze Brothers” bottle
shop!
DJ Glen and MC Jazz provide entertainment every
Friday and Saturday night in the renowned Victoria
nightclub, with music predominantly played from the
Nightlife HDMS™ system with Numark controller. Audio
visual highlights include 4 x 42" Plasma Screens,
1 x 50" Plasma Screen, 2 x NEC projectors, 4
x Martin Mac 250+ intelligent lights, strobe ignitor
tubes, various other disco effects, plus a Jem Hazer
and a Martin Lightjockey Control system.
Nightlife’s HDMS™ Scheduler is used day and
night and is programmed to suit the hotel’s
trading patterns. The interfacing digital Jukebox
allows patrons to pick their own music, but their
selections are controlled by the scheduled playlists
to ensure the appropriate atmosphere is maintained
at all times. And the real bonus here is that the
venue keeps 100% of the revenue from the juke.
You can see Nightlife in action at these other Saturno
hotels in South Australia: Norwood (Finn McCools),
Unley on Clyde, Findon and the Slug ‘n’ Lettuce.

September New
Releases
Having been
bitten by the dance bug during a well-publicised
season in Ibiza
last year, P. Diddy finally drops his debut
house record this month, Let’s Get
Ill. The “black Frank Sinatra”(!)
has collaborated with UK producer Nellee
Hooper and the result is a guaranteed dancefloor
smash! The track also features the guest
vocals of Kelis. This month on CR90 we have
released the radio edit of the Deep Dish
Mix to whip up your floors.
|
 |
Diddy proteges 112 - Marvin, Daron,
Q and Mike emerge this month with a brand new
hit single called Na, Na, Na, Na. Hot & Wet
is the name of their 3rd album and is the first
from their new home of Def Jam Records. The single
itself is a smokin’ dancehall/reggae club
joint featuring the vocal skills of Jamaican
superstar Supercat. Check it on CR90. |

|
 |
With dancehall getting
bigger everyday, 19 year old singer/rapper,
Lumidee emerges
from the Spanish Harlem district of New York
with the catchy Never Leave You (Uh Ooh,
Uh Oooh). This track is from her forthcoming
album Almost Famous and features raps from
Busta Rhymes and Fabolous. It hit the streets
two weeks ago on CRX90. |
|
|
 |
Mary J. Blige has released the
first single Love @ First Sight featuring Method
Man from her latest set Love & Life. The
album will be executive-produced by Mary and
P. Diddy (he’s everywhere man!) who haven’t
worked on an album together since her 1994 release,
My Life. The two had a falling out but reunited
in 2001 to record a remix for Blige’s hit
No More Drama. Play the new tune from ED90. |

Eminem has disproved the notion
that white boys can’t rap. White girls,
on the other hand, have had pretty much zero
impact on the 30 year old genre. Now a new face,
20 year old New Yorker Sarai, is raising new
hopes that there might be someone new to go where
none have been before. This month on CR90 the “feminem” releases
the rap/party anthem, Ladies from her debut album
The Original. |
| |
| New music time...
Cam Farrar has exploded onto the Australian (and
world) music scene with his debut single Wasted.
Having already spent 6 consecutive weeks atop
the ARIA Club Chart, Cam himself describes Wasted
as “full on - an explosive hybrid of punk,
new wave, electro, house and techno”. The
song is set to do big things for Cam and you
can see it first on CRX90. |
| |
|
 |
ARIA award winner Alex Lloyd returns
to the scene this month with his aptly titled
single, Coming Home. This is the first single
from his eagerly awaited third album Distant
Light which will be released nationally on September
29. In the meantime, you can play this track
from RD 90. |

DJ
Paul - Mad Cow Tavern Townsville, North
Qld
Being involved
with music since the age of 5 (his mother DJ’d on armed forces
radio in Malaysia), it’s no surprise that
during the 90s, DJ Paul Preston (aka DJ Red)
was Australia’s #1 Reggae DJ and has worked
at some of the major clubs on the Gold Coast.
These days Paul presents the Breakfast program
every weekday on North Queensland’s 99.9
Live FM, and burns the candle both ends by DJing
at the Mad Cow Tavern in Townsville. (Watch for
Mad Cow opening in Cairns later this month!)
|
Paul
started using Nightlife in 1993 when video tape was
still the go, and remembers the amount of
equipment and mixers needed to present music video
back then – how things have changed, but he
reckons it’s still a heap of fun.
His day job with Wild Blue Music includes being
part of the team producing the first official R&B
40 Countdown Show, which is set to go to air on an
Australia wide network soon.

Technically
Speaking - HDMS™ SOFTWARE UPGRADE
This month’s release of new music
contains some exciting changes to your HDMS™ software.
Lists –The total number of lists has been
increased from 30 to 60. This gives you space to
make an extra 30 of your own lists!
The following letters may appear on the left hand
side of your playlist to show how a song has been
selected. This information is also collated under
Statistics in the Utilities menu and appears in the
Log:
L A user list (rather than a Nightlife list) has
been loaded through Scheduler or by using [F9].
DJ The song has been searched for and selected manually
rather than through a list loading in Scheduler or
by using [F9].
$ The song has been selected from the jukebox.
[F5] function key – Now a more practical and
user-friendly way to see which lists (both Nightlife
and user) a song is in. It will also allow you to
add and remove songs from a user list. We will cover
this in more depth in next month’s article.
For help with using these new features on your HDMS™,
or for any other technical assistance, call the Tech
Support team on toll free 1800 773 468.

and helping with ‘day to day housekeeping’!
You too can help by keeping the power supply to your
HDMS™ clean. That is, free of any other devices. The
system also loves a clean environment, lots of ventilation
and TLC. Treat it well and it will return the favour!
The next couple of months will be dominated by World
Cup Rugby with the screen action switching from video
clip to footy. Use the Billboards to keep your patrons
well informed of viewing times, and with some luck
we will have something to celebrate!! Aussie readers
take note!
