Jobs that rock – BDM Jonathan Weatherston

Chelsea Handasyde Jobs That Rock

Business Development Manager Jonathan Weatherston is building a Sales career at Nightlife. With a background in music technology, IT and AV, it’s almost like he was made to work here. We got him off the phone to ask a few questions and see what makes him tick.

You’ve been a Nightlifer for almost 3 years now. How did you come to be here?

I’ve always loved music and technology, so much so that I have a bachelor’s degree in Music Technology. My fascination with the technology behind making music has led me to recording, writing and producing my own music. Having spent a few years in retail sales and holding a handful of different IT and AV tech roles with companies like Apple and Cutting Edge, I was on the lookout for a change and a challenge. When I saw the role at Nightlife advertised, it seemed like the perfect fit for me; I’m able to work in music and technology and can grow a career in Business Development.  I can’t believe that it’s been nearly 3 years – it certainly has flown by.

What does a typical day look like as a Sales professional at Nightlife?

A typical day in Sales at Nightlife is exciting! As a BDM (Business Development Manager) I get to work with businesses where music is important, helping them to design tailored entertainment solutions for their brand and customers. Whether it’s the latest cool bar, a fine dining restaurant, a rural country pub or a fitness club, it’s always great to help clients improve their business through music.

We have some of the most innovative products on the market that are changing the way that people consume music and it’s great to be a part of it. I also regularly consult with clients and prospects on music licensing, venue acoustics and audio-visual solutions to assist in making sure that our solutions are as effective as possible once installed into a client venue.

You’re known as ‘Mr Fitness’ within the business and were instrumental in placing Nightlife as the preferred entertainment supplier for Anytime Fitness (we’re now in 331 out of 460 clubs across the country). Why do you think our products fit so well in the fitness space?

The fitness industry is very competitive, so the member experience is key. Having the ability to provide members with an engaging personalised entertainment experience is paramount. Our fitness product is like nothing else on the market and with features such as crowdDJ® and our interactive kiosks we can deliver a unique experience to members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by inviting them to be involved and picking the songs that motivate them in their workout. When you partner this with our commercial hardware, produced content, apps for system control and extensive video capabilities including music video, ambient visuals (gym TV) and digital advertising, it presents significant value for a fitness business and something that members, staff and owners love.

As our BDM for ACT, Newcastle and Victoria, you regularly travel to see clients and attend trade shows. Do you have any hot tips for business travel?

Wear comfortable shoes at trade shows, always allow enough travel time between meetings and pack snacks. A busy day on the road with back to back meetings means you never know when your next meal will be 😉

What’s the stand out moment for you from your time at Nightlife so far?

It would have to be the work that I have done with Anytime Fitness, I have now transitioned close to 300 clubs across to Nightlife personally and this is something that I am really proud to be a part of. I was also fortunate to attend the ARIA awards a few years ago – that was certainly a stand out moment for me.

You have a burgeoning watch collection – what is it about watches?

I have always loved watches and saved up for my 30th birthday to purchase my first Swiss made watch. Ever since then, I have been slowly growing my collection. A quality watch will last you a lifetime and I like the idea of having different options each day.

Finally, what are your personal or professional goals for the future?

I look forward to continuing to grow in my role and expanding my knowledge into all areas of the Nightlife Business. I have spent most of my career at Nightlife working with clients across the fitness industry; so I am enjoying honing my skills in other verticals and exploring opportunities across all industries that we work with.
