Created by Arts Centre Melbourne in collaboration with the music industry, the Australian Music Vault is dedicated to sharing the stories of Australian contemporary music through a free exhibition, as well as digital and educational programs.
With support coming from Major Partners ARIA, APRA and Spotify; the Australian Music Vault allows visitors to discover the people, events and cultural influences that contributed to the birth and ongoing evolution of the Australian Contemporary Music scene.
The launch event
As part of our contribution, we came on board to help with the Vault’s VIP opening night on December 18th, 2017. Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum, Archie Roach, Tina Arena and Kylie Minogue were some of the influential names present; along with music industry representatives and partners, officials, politicians and sponsors.
Using our crowdDJ® platform, attendees were able to use the free crowdDJ app; or interactive kiosk; in order to request their favourite track with content from the Music vault being showcased on the platform. Nightlife Senior Music Programmer, Nick Jones was DJ for the night and played out the selections from the crowd based on the demand for each track.
Australian Music Vault
Under the banner of our crowdDJ service, Nightlife has provided music and licensing consultancy; as well as produced audio assets to accompany each object within the exhibition; allowing visitors to experience the musical essence of each object that is activated through touch screen digital labels. We have curated the songs, and even sourced and produced some tracks which have never been digitised previously.
Senior Curator of the Australian Music Vault, Carolyn Laffan says; the support from Nightlife has been vital in providing the musical content to drive the audio discovery aspect of the exhibition.
“We are excited about the learning and discovery our visitors will make as they explore each object in the exhibition; obviously a key part of this journey will be the music content itself,” Laffan said. “We’re delighted to have an expert partner in Nightlife to ensure the musical content experience in the exhibition is produced to the highest standards and correctly licensed for use.”
Nightlife’s Content Director, Matt Lymbury said the AMV project has been a real joy for his team; all of whom are dedicated musical trainspotters.
“In a way it’s a similar process when we’re researching a specialised brief for a venue. For the Australian Music Vault the brief is all about the heritage of Australian music; the artists and groups that have shaped our musical DNA … we’ve loved being involved to help tell that story.”
Australian Music Vault is free and open daily, and will run alongside a calendar of live performances, education programs, as well as public events. There have already been 50,000 people through the doors; when will you add yourself to the visitor tally?
